Club Notes - Oct 31, 2018

Happy Halloween!  For those who missed today's meeting, you missed some good cookies and cupcakes that someone brought in.

Last week we received several thank you notes.  One was from Cornerstone Hospice for the veteran's quilts we have sent.  A second was from the Ocala Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center for the last donation of pillowcases, quilts, small bags, duffel bags, and miscellaneous toiletry items.  But the one that surprised me was an envelope with several individual thank you cards from some of the boys at the Sheriff's Youth Ranch, for the quilts we sent.

Show and Tell:

Brenda Severa showed a baby blanket she made for her new great-grand daughter.

Mic Pickard was busy last week.  She showed a set of 12 place mats for the Youth Ranch,

a table runner,

coasters using her new favorite stitch around the edge.

and name tags she made with her new sewing machine.

Sue Campbell made a set of 12 place mats for the Youth Ranch.

Charlotte Cecilio also made a set of 12 place mats (She fooled me because she sent me a photo of them yesterday and I thought she wasn't coming to the meeting today.  She snuck in when I wasn't looking. )

Diane Placek showed a quilt square she made as part of a block a week challenge she is participating in.

Debbie Ardman made 2 cog beds with cute doggie fabric.

Donna Rissman made a Christmas Wall Hanging.

Alice Meunier showed several items she made at a Kimberbell Embroidery class at Sharky's.

Carol RIggs shared photos of a set of fabric "paper" dolls that a friend has for sale.

Diana Gosselin made a Christmas quilt a few weeks ago and I finally quilted it last week.  This is going to the Panhandle collection.

At the end of show and tell Pat Pipa did a quick demo on how to make a fabric pumpkin.  These are basically large yo-yos.

I then gave a demo on how to make a small fabric cornucopia.  The pattern, with my hand-written corrections, is attached to my email.  You can make larger versions of this if you like as well.   I saw several of these completed before the end of today's meeting.

While some ladies were working on the cornucopias, several others sorted through a couple of our boxes of fabric scraps and Diana Gosselin cut up much of the bolt of fabric we recently got for pillowcases.   Sue Campbell and I pinned 2 quilts to get them ready for quilting.  I'm hoping to get these done in time to give them to Lynn Klucynski for delivery to the Panhandle.

Next week Lu Karatzas is on the schedule to demo fabric postcards.  I will send more info when I get it from her.

See you in November.

Club Notes - Oct. 24, 2018

Lots of great food and fun this afternoon.  Today's games were Florida trivia and Halloween Bingo.  I selected 30 questions out of a set of 250 I found online and stumped almost everyone.  Susie Pendry got the most right answers at 19.5.

Announcements:

Pat Pipa talked to Nita Hand.  Her first knee replacement surgery went well and she is recovering well, with lots of attention from her family.  She has to wait at least 6 weeks before they will do the other knee.

We have a new supply of batting for charity quilts.  A person who wishes to remain anonymous has purchased a 90 inch by 40 yard bolt for our club's use.  If you have a quilt top for charity and need batting, just let me know the size and when you will be at one of our club meetings.

Lynn has established a contact who is collecting quilts for the families around Panama City whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Michael.  I had 7 quilts I was holding to bring to the Ocala Shelter, but decided to give them to Lynn for this post-hurricane collection.  Those families lost everything and are living in tents on the concrete slabs that used to be their homes.

If you have a quilt to donate or can make one, Lynn will be collecting them between now and November 14th.  She will then deliver them to the woman collecting them, so they can get to Panama City by Thanksgiving.  If you would like to take some of the fabric blocks or panels we have and put together a quilt, you can pick them out next Wednesday and take them home to work on.

The Boggy Creek Bear ladies are coming back in January and they have asked for their shelf in the storage closet back by December 1st.  That means I will have to take half of the boxes of fabric we have at El Santiago out in November.  If you think you can make a quilt, pillowcases, placemats, or fidget walker bags from any of our supplies over the next few months, please take the supplies you need home so I will have a little less to go into storage.

Show and Tell:

Bev Minnerly finished 4 place mats for the Sheriff's Youth Ranch.

Pat Pipa showed a mouse ornament and 2 crocheted children's purses for Busy Hands.

Donna Rissman showed a Halloween purse she made

Deb McCuiston showed 2 pillowcases she made.  (These were her first ever and she did great!)

Susie Pendry showed several table runners and a bench-pillow cover.

(In full Minnie Mouse costume) I showed the set of 12 place mats I finished.

For next week, I have a pattern for a cornucopia.  I will send out a supply list for that in a later email.

See you next week.

Club Notes - Oct 17, 2018

This afternoon we took on a project to supply the Sheriff's Youth Ranch with place mats for each cottage's family dinner.  Each cottage has 10 kids and a parent couple and there are 6 cottages at Live Oaks.   One of these cottages is for girls, ,the rest are all boys.   So our initial goal is to make 6 coordinated sets of 12 place mats, for a total of 72 place mats.

Once we get past that, there are 3 other youth ranches with an average of 50 boys and 40 girls each (plus the parent couples).  I brought in LOTS of donated fabric and asked each person to either select enough to make 12 place mats in a similar design, or team with someone else to make 6 each.  I am happy to report that I went home with 2 boxes of fabric less than what I brought in. I am looking forward to seeing what comes back in a few weeks.  I'd like to be able to deliver these before Thanksgiving, so it would be great to have then all in by Nov 14th.

If you need more fabric to complete this, please let me know what color you are looking for and I will bring in a box of that color on Oct 31 or Nov 7th, depending on when you will be there.

Show and Tell:

Donna Rissman announced that this is "Flash Demo Wednesday", so she did a flash demo on how to make a candy corn mug rug.

I showed 3 quilts I finished.  The first was a quilt top Pat Pipa made and I quilted.

The second was from a Halloween panel rejected by Busy Hands that I made into a quick quilt.

The third was from a set of blocks I pulled from our stash and organized into a quilt.

Next week is our Halloween Pot-luck.  Costumes optional.  Bring a dish to share if you can, but there is always plenty of food, so don't worry if you can't.   I will supply paper plates, plastic-ware, etc. and ice tea.  I will send out a separate reminder a few days.  Hope you can join us for food, fun games and prizes.

Club Notes - Oct 10, 2018

Thank you to Pat Pipa for running the meeting in my absence and to Bev Minnerly for doing the Tunic demo for me.  Your help made it easier for me to concentrate on my husband's care.  His surgery on Tuesday morning was successful and, after 2 nights in the hospital I was able to bring him home this afternoon.  He has some serious recovery time ahead over the next few weeks, but the overall outlook is good.

Notes from Pat:

"Meeting went well. We only had a few members attending because of the weather and they did not bring their machines. We had a drop in reporter from the Daily Sun. He watched the show and tell and then talked to Lu and left. Bev talked about the Boys Ranch luncheon and told some stories about some of the children at the ranch. Bev then did the demo.  Some of the ladies made patterns. Mic and I sorted out the pillow case cuff fabric into cuff fabric and fabric we thought might make backing for place mats. A few of the ladies want to know how to make the hot dog pillow case method. I asked Eileen if she would demo it for them.   Eileen also showed  a few of the ladies how to make fabric bowls."

Show and Tell:

Audrey Phillips was back with us and showed her lobster bib.

Pat Pipa made some pillow cases

Lu Karatzas showed some crocheted bags

Eileen D'Santo made some Halloween mug rugs

Bev Minnerly showed the tunic she made for this week's project.

Last week I told you that we didn't win the $100 gift certificate from The quilting Pallet because our donation of 52 pillowcases was eclipsed by a 300+ donation from a Leesburg group.  However, what I didn't realize was that the shop was giving out 2nd and 3rd place prizes.  We got $25 for 3rd place!  I made a quick run over there this afternoon to get our prize and immediately spent it on some solid blue and lavender fabric that we can hopefully match with some of the busy print pillowcase cuffs we've collected.  While there, Karen King offered us another bolt of fabric for our charity work!  Her generosity is amazing.  She told me that her shop turned over about 500 pillowcases to the Mile of Pillowcases event.

I sent out a note earlier asking which date would be better for our Halloween pot-luck.  it seems a number of you will be away 10/31, so we are sticking with 10/24 for the party.

 Here is our current schedule:

Club Notes - Oct. 3, 2018

We had a small group today, but lots of activity.
  Announcements:

Last week I delivered 52 pillowcases to The Quilting Pallet for the Ryan's Case challenge.  We were nowhere near winning the prize for the most pillowcases.  A group from Leesburg handed in 302!

I also gave the 2 quilts with vintage fabric quilt tops to the VHA on Tuesday.  They will be raffled off at the Hoedown to raise funds for the VHA's medical equipment for Villagers.

Today I handed 9 quilts, 13 pillowcases, 17 duffel bags, plus an assortment of supply items to Bev Minnerly, fo delivery to the Sheriff's Boys Ranch.  If you haven't seen the article in the paper, the ranch is no longer just for boys.  They have established space to handle girls as well so siblings can stay together at the ranch.

Last week I found out that the volunteers at the front desk of The Villages Hospital used to have a supply of stuffed animals to give to little kids coming into the hospital.  They have been out of them for quite a while, so I proposed that we give the dolls and elephants we made to them.  Everyone at today's meeting agreed.  I'd like to continue this as our destination for any stuffed toys we make.

Show and Tell:

Eileen DiSanto was the only one to sign up for show and tell this week. She brought in 2 lovely pillowcases.

I made up for the lack of other show and tell.  I finished a bunch of easy, quick projects this week - pillowcases for my husband and myself, a walker bag, a sample of the tunic that will be next week's project, and 2 styles of eyeglass cases for today's demo.

BTW, I purposely made my tunic oversized as a loose pool cover-up.  The pattern allows for sizes from 10 to 24.

******************

Next week Pat Pipa will run the meeting and Bev Minnerly will show you how to make the tunic.  I will send the instructions in a separate email.  See you in 2 weeks.
