Club Notes - May 1, 2019

We had lots of good food and fun today.  It was a little different from our past pot-lucks because we also had visitors.  Skip and Carol Bryan came to pick up the quilts, duffle bags, and pillowcases we made for the Sheriff's Youth Ranch kids.   There were 8 twin size quilts, duffle bags and pillow cases for the graduates and 7 smaller quilts, 8 fleece blankets, and pillowcases for the new kids coming in the fall.  I calculated the value of these based only on the material used and it came to $4,554.90.  That does not include the time spent.  Thanks again to all who contributed to this effort.

Skip and Carol spent some time telling us about the ranch and answering questions.  It was very interesting. One of the questions that I've heard often is "What happens to the kids once they graduate"  They explained that the kids continue to receive support and receive tuition assistance in college or trade school if they keep up their grades.  There is also an alumni cottage for kids going to a local college so they don't have to find an apartment until the have a job.

After they left we continued with show and tell:

Show and Tell:

Lu Karatzas showed 2 quilts she made for her family cabin in New Hampshire.  These are to replace ones that were destroyed when the cabin burned 2 years ago.

Donna Rissman brought in pillowcases and a duffle bag for the new kids at the Youth Ranch.

Pat Pipa brought in pillowcases for our charities and 2 for her granddaughter who is going to college in Tennessee.  (Of course, Jane Swafford supplied the Tennessee fabric.  Anyone who knows Jane will understand.)

She also made 2 men's and 2 women's aprons for Busy Hands to give to nursing facilities

Ellen Hein finished another fleece blanket for our charities and 2 sleep sacks for her grandson.

Deb Chapman made a bunch of pillow cases.

Diane Placek also handed in some pillowcases.

At the beginning of the meeting today I talked about 2 thank you cards we received.  One was from the South Lake Animal League for the dog beds we gave them last month.

The second was from the Villages Hospital Auxiliary.  Last year we gave them a bunch of dolls to give out to children coming through either as patients or visiting relatives.  The toys are stress relievers for both the children and parents.  The card thanked us for the dolls and explained that that they haven't had any to give out since January and the church they used to get them from has not supplied any in a long time.

I found a pattern for a little stuffed frog that can be made with only 2 ten inch square pieces.  I proposed that shift the project schedule around and we make a bunch of these next week.  Everyone there agreed.

I also received a request to do a demo on the microwave bowl holders so some of the newer members of the group can learn, so I've put that on the schedule too.  Here is the revised schedule for the next few weeks.

08-May-19Stuffed Frogs
15-May-19Microwave Bowl Covers
22-May-19Handle Cover/Seat Belt Clasp
29-May-19Charity Projects - Hospice Veterans Quilt
05-Jun-19Flag Pillow
12-Jun-19Origami Fun

We don't have any other demos scheduled after that, so if anyone has any ideas, let me know.
