Club Notes - January 24, 2024

 I love our winter meetings.  We get to see so many more of our friends as our snow birds and snow flakes are in town.  Today we had 21members attending, plus 2 guests.

We had 2 announcements.  As I mentioned in a prior email, we are looking for donations of 1” wide ribbon.  This will be used by the Santiago ladies club to finish the Boggie Creek bears. I found a bag with some nice ribbon at the rec center today.  If you have any more, please bring it to next week’s meeting so I can get it to them by Feb 1^st.

The Villages Quilt Guild is sponsoring the bi-annual quilter’s Marketplace next Friday and Saturday, January 26-27 at Rohan Recreation center.  For more information go to QGOTV.org.

Show and Tell:

Pat Pipa made a couple of 9-patch blocks.

Kathryn Jeter showed a bag, 

2 quilts,

and several embroideries.

Lorraine Manz turned in some 9-patch blocks, 

a pile of walker bags and a pile of backpacks.

Lisa Strahs-Lorenc showed the block tote bag she finished from our demo a few weeks ago.

Ellen Hein showed the quilts she finished the binding on for us.

I believe this quilt top was turned in by a lady in Allamanda Quilters.

Mary Ellen Boutin made this black and white quilt and the red and white quilt below.

A long fabric was donated to us, with each square having a message of Love, Peace, Joy, Patience, Kindness, Faithfullness, Gentleness and Self Control.  Instead of using this as a backing, I cut it in half and made 2 quilts.

Deb Chapman turned in this quilt top.

I have not been able to identify who made this quilt top. 

Ellen Hein made the following Cornerstone Hospice quilts.

Lisa Holzhausen showed a Kimberbell embroidery she finished.

Candy Dodge forgot to sign up for show and tell, but remembered to show her centerpiece later in the afternoon.

 

Today I showed a Valentine mug rug that you can easily make, using either regular or reverse applique.  I tend to like reverse applique but that’s a personal preference.  The instruction for this project is attached to my email.  It was originally designed to use a layer cake (10” fabric set), but that much fabric is not needed.  I wrote the actual sizes of the fabric pieces on the copy I am sending.  I brought a recent batting donation and some of our red, pink and white fabric for anyone who wanted to try making some of these.

We received another fabric donation yesterday and several ladies helped me sort through it. Mic added the larger pieces to the bins she keeps for us and I took the small pieces to be cut into squares.

The 3.5” squares were put out for anyone who wanted to make some more 9-patches. I also put out the box of large blocks in the hope that something in there might spark someone’s creativity.  There were also 2 quilt kits that I announced are available for anyone who would like to put them together.

It has been a while since we did a strip block project, so that is the plan for next week.   If you can bring your sewing machine, this would be a good week to do so.  If you can’t, you can still pick out some fabric strips and take them home to work on.  I have a box of strips sorted by color for you to choose from and I will bring base fabric.  I’m hoping each lady can make 4 coordinated blocks.

Club Notes January 17, 2023

Thanks again to Brenda for running the meeting this week.   Ray and I are on the road to recovery from our colds/virus, so I will be back next week.

Here are the notes Brenda sent me.

"Well we only had 10 members today but lots of talking with a few of us really sewing away.  Hope you and Ray are feeling better.  

We only had 2 show n tells. 

 I had a Yooper hat that we made back in Wi made out of scrap fleece and super simple to make.  Some of the homeless could probably use these last couple weeks, they are very warm.  

Mary Ellen had a tote made from squares-pattern that was provided plus she made 2 zipper bags.

I want to thank everyone helping set up and take down."

Club Notes - January 10, 2024

We had a great turnout for our first pot-luck of 2024.  Nineteen of us enjoyed great food, show and tell, trivia, and Bingo based on life in The Villages.   

Show and Tell:

I started by showing the tote I finished from last week’s demo.

Pat Pipa showed the tote she made.

Brenda Severa showed a Valentine’s wall hanging 

and a quilt top she made from a 3 yd pattern.

Mary Ellen Boutin made 2 backpacks and 2 totes. 

Kathryn Jeter turned in two 9-patch blocks.

B.J. Herter turned in a dinosaur.

Audrey Phillips showed a ginger bread girl ornament and showed a purse she made a few years ago.

 

During the past week I sorted through the fabric that came in last week.  I separated the larger pieces into backing size, small pieces (at least 7”) that are width of fabric, larger pieces, fat quarters, and 2.5” strips. Everything else has been put aside for me to cut into squares. 

I will bring the large and WOF pieces next week for you to look through.  There are 3 large purple blocks and enough purple fabric that could be worked around it to make a quilt, if anyone is interested in playing with that.

I also plan to bring the 9-patch blocks that have been turned in so far so we can try laying them out for a quilt top.

Club Notes - January 3, 2024

Our first meeting of 2024 included 15 members, including 1 new member, and one guest.  I brought all our 5” squares for everyone to select, plus a box of larger pieces leftover from quilt backings. Ruth Nelson also brought in 2 bags of fabric, both large pieces and scraps, for us to sort through.   There was enough left for me to take home to keep me busy measuring and sorting this weekend. For today’s demo I showed how to make a tote from 5” squares.  You need 19 squares for the outer fabric and another 19 squares for the lining, plus 2 straps.  I’m attaching the pattern. Note that there are a few differences between the pattern and what I talked about.  The instruction talks about adding piping.  I changed the instruction to make piping option 2 and added an option 1 showing the way I do it.

Show and Tell:

Louise Stem showed several pieces of Christmas needlework that she has done over the years.

Carolyn Grasso turned in some 9-patch blocks and showed a parcheesi mat she is making.

Mary Ellen Boutin turned in several zipper bags and finished her first draw-string backpack during the afternoon.

Ruth Nelson showed a Christmas table runner and centerpiece she made.

Ellen Hein turned in a completed flannel quilt.

 

Lisa Stahs-Lorenc sent me pictures of doll clothes she made for her grandchildren to match their Halloween costumes.

Next week we will celebrate the holidays with our winter potluck.  Bring a dish to share if you can.  We will have our usual trivia and bingo games.  Remember to bring 25 pennies or buttons or whatever works to mark your bingo cards.
