Club Notes - April 24, 2024

There were 14 of us today, including one new member.  Thanks to Ellen Hein for working with our new lady to get her started sewing on her new machine.

I started by talking about the requests from Freedom Pointe and the UF Leesburg Maternity unit.  I thought we had some nice flannel for the receiving blankets, but when I unrolled the bundles we realized that they were just a soft cotton.  These will be available for making the Tummy Time quilts instead.  I asked the group if there would be any objections to my using some of our charity funds to buy some flannel for these and none of the ladies present objected.  I will make a trip to Hobby Lobby  because it looks like they have the best price for this.

Show and Tell:

B.J. Herter brought 3 dinos and 2 walker bags.

Deb Chapman showed a quilt top she made using some of our “Big Blocks”.

Ceal Pedersen brought the stuffed animals that she painted the faces on.

Louise Stem turned in 4 pillowcases and showed a table cover she made.

Carolyn Grasso made a dog bed, a Teddy Bear, and a rocket toy.

Pat Pipa made 2 fidget walker bags.

Jean Peters made 6 catheter bags.

I showed 4 purses I made for our October sale.

We received several bags of fabric scraps from Allamanda on Tuesday, so several ladies spent the afternoon sorting through them.  We filled a couple of dog beds and picked out a few usable pieces.  There were a couple of 1 yard flannel pieces in the fabric bin and I cut them into reasonable size (35” x 36”) for receiving blankets, with the leftover 8” x 36” pieces perfect for matching burp pads.  Ellen trimmed the corners to curves and roll-serged them.  We will pull some small quilts out of storage and be able to give our first donation to Leesburg Hospital next week.

I brought a box of fat quarters this week and saw several ladies select some of these. I also saw some big blocks go.  It will be fun to see what comes back.

Club Notes - April 17, 2024

Twelve of us got together this afternoon to sew.  We were met with some unexpected news.  The El Santiago rec center is scheduled for some extensive renovations in May. As a result, the rec center will be closed May 13-26, and possibly a week longer than that.  We will have to take a break from meeting while this work is being done.   I will keep you all informed.

We continued working on the walker bags today.   When I left today I had 14 completed walker bags.  Brenda and I will meet with the activity coordinator at Freedom Point rehab on Friday to turn these over and establish a relationship.

I also expect to meet with the representative nurse from Leesburg within the next week to confirm their requirements.

Show and Tell:

Nilda Nicoletta made 4 eyeglass cases.

B.J. Herter turned in a walker bag.

Mic Pickard turned in 4 walker bags that she made and 4 that Mary Ellen Boutin dropped off.

Ceal Pedersen brought 2 bags full of stuffed toys that she painted the eyes on.

Pat Pipa made 2 walker bags.

Bev Minnerly showed a stuffed cat and 4 doll bodies that she made for Dolls From the Heart.

Ellen Hein handed in a Hospice quilt for me to quilt

and showed several quilts that she completed the binding on for us.

I made 2 sets of microwave bowls

and sewed together 2 quilt tops using 9-patch blocks that have been turned in.

I showed the patterns for 2 potholders today.  The first is shaped like a leaf and can be made with fabric strips or a solid piece of fabric.   The second is a  pocket potholder that can be made in a regular size or as a casserole carrier.   I will send out the patterns for these in separate emails.  Our recommendation is, if you make either potholder in the standard size, please make the in sets of 2. We have the fabric, Insul-Bright and cotton batting scraps for anyone wanting to make some.

Mic and Anne have been busy putting together  walker bag kits and have handed out quite a few to be worked on over the next week.  We should be able to complete Freedom Point’s request in no time.

Hope to see you all next week.

Club Notes - April 10, 2024

We had a great turnout today – 18 ladies arrived.  We brought stuffing, wrap n zap batting, and some of the large pieces of fabric from storage.   I also did a quick demo on how to make an easy eyeglass case.  We decided we could sell these at the October craft sale for $3 each.  I’ve attached the instruction.

 Show and Tell:

Carolyn Grasso made a backpack with a matching zipper bag,

and a quilt for her granddaughter.

Nilda Nicoletta made 2 stuffed bears and a quilt top.

Bev Minnerly made 2 cats,

2 pillowcases,

and 3 doll bodies for another club she joined.

Pat Pipa made a walker bag.

Anne Knoff came with patterns for several new stuffed toys.

a pig, a turtle,

a rocket

and a whale.

B.J. Herter made 3 dinos.

Ceal Pedersen painted faces on a bag full of stuffed animals.

(I gave Mic this bag plus 2 more, for a total of 45 stuffed toys to be delivered to The Villages Hospital Auxiliary)

Brenda Severa showed several towels she embroidered.

A flamingo

A rabbit and a lamb

The same cat on 2 different towel backgrounds
and a squirrel

Louise Stem made 4 pillowcases

Audrey Phillips made a walker bag.

After show and tell I give the quick eyeglass case demo and gave a one-on-one lesson to Nilda on how to make them.

Everyone was very busy all afternoon.  The main activity was cutting out walker bag kits.  Some were taken home while others will come back next week to be assembled.  It looks like we will have enough made for Freedom Point within a week or two.

I will also do a demo on how to make one of the potholder patterns for our sale.

Hope to see you next week.
