Club Notes - August 23, 2023

We had a small group of 10 ladies today.  I think I scared a few of you away saying I might be late.  As it turned out, my appointment this morning went smoothly.  I was done by 11:30AM and at the rec center by 12:15PM.

I brought a light load this week – only the 3 boxes of 3.5 inch squares and a box of uncut white. The challenge for today was to match up sets of 9 squares to make 9 patch blocks.  Enough squares went out the door so we were able to reduce the 3 boxes to 2.  There was enough room on our shelf in the closet to leave the 2 boxes there, so they will be available for anyone who wants to continue this effort next week.

As a result of the email that I forwarded listing the items that the Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch would like, I got some questions about zipper bags.  We have a box of tougher fabric for zipper bags in the closet and a box of zippers.  A couple of the ladies looked through this fabric and took some to work on.

 Show and Tell:

Bev Minnerly made some trivets,

tote bags,

and pillowcases.

Louise Stem made a set of microwave bowls,

2 pillowcases,

and finished another valance for her house.

Carolyn Grasso finished a set of mini-quilts.

Ceal Pedersen showed a quilt she finished.

Mic Pickard completed a vest from a panel in our donations

 and a tote.

Ellen Hein completed the binding on a bunch of small quilts I gave her.

+++++++++++++++

Next week I plan to show how to make a folding fabric box.  More info on this will be sent in a separate email.

Hope to see you next week.

Club Notes - August 16, 2023

Today I brought the same supplies as last week - a box of miscellaneous donated fabric, our 6.5” squares, some batting scraps, wrap n zap, and insul-brite.  Ceal Pedersen.gave a brief talk on the process of making a quilt, including preparation, seam stitching, top stitching, and seam pressing.

Last week the applications for the QGOTV Fall Craft Sale came out and I submitted a request for 2 tables, along with the check for $20.  Although I haven’t received confirmation yet, we should get the space for the sale. It will be on October 28, 2023 from 9:00am – 2:00pm (setup at 7:30am), at Savannah Recreation Center.

Show and Tell:

Pat Pipa made a fidget walker bag and a zipper bag..

Charlotte Cecillio made some dinos

and a stack of Christmas stocking mug rugs.

Carolyn Grasso showed several completed row-by-rows.

The first is a house wall hanging

and the other 2 are quilts.

Ceal Pedersen showed 2 cats, a giraffe,

and 2 quilts.

Ellen Hein made 4 Hospice quilt tops

and, during the meeting,

finished the binding on a baby quilt Ann Knoff handed in a few weeks ago.

+++++++++++++++

Thanks to everyone who took some of the fabric home to make things, and to those who sorted through the boxes to see what is useful and what is not.  They found several backing fabrics and separated a pile of fabric we don’t have a use for to send to Goodwill.

I pulled enough pink squares to make a quilt and found a bunch of fish in panels that I can turn into a quilt.  I also cut border fabric for one of my panels, so I went home with 3 quilts to work on 😊

Next week I am going to give you a little challenge.  I will be bringing the 3.5” squares.  The challenge will be to match up sets of 9 squares to make 9-patch blocks.  Once we have enough 9-patch blocks we can turn them into a quilt.

Hope to see you next week.

Club Notes - August 9, 2023

It was another very hot day outside, but 15 ladies braved the heat to enjoy the air conditioning in El Santiago this afternoon.  I brought a box of miscellaneous donated fabric, our 6.5” squares, some batting scraps, wrap n zap, and insul-brite.   We even had one new Villager checking us out to see if she wants to join our club.  Today’s objective was to make some more tissue holders for the October sale.  A couple of ladies cut and pressed the pieces, and Mic sewed them.  We now have about 2 dozen of these completed.

Show and Tell:

Carolyn Grasso made a couple of microwave potato bags.

Mic Pickard turned an orphan applique I gave her into a great tote bag.

Ceal Pedersen took a pile of quilt blocks that were donated home last week and came back today with a complete quilt top.

Pat Pipa showed a garden flag she completed.

Bev Minnerly turned in a bunch of potholders

and 2 dog bed sleeves.

Diane Placek explored YouTube andmade a “fish” drawstring bag

 and a wallet.

Ellen Hein showed 2 quilt tops she is working on

and some red, white and blue squares she sewed.

Jean Peters made a couple of walker bags

Patty Woodruff showed a tote she made from a jelly roll

and a pencil case.

Audrey Phillips showed a gift she made for a new neighbor. It consists of 2 rolls of toilet paper(with a face), a dish towel, and a scrubby, all nicely packaged.

She also made some tissue holders and some strip blocks she is working on.

I showed some hot pads I finished.  These came from a bunch of 6.5” squares of fabric and matching batting squares.  I just added fabric from our stash..

+++++++++++++++

Next week Ceal is going to show us the correct way to nest seams when making a quilt.  I will probably bring the same supplies I did this week.  If anyone wants something else to work with, let me know. As a reminder, we keep some zipper bag fabric, zippers, buttons, and the box of large orphan blocks in the closet.  You can pull any of those out to explore any week.

Hope to see you next week.
