Club Notes - February 24, 2021

We had our first meeting at Chatham Recreation center this afternoon and I was very pleased with the turnout.  There were 13 of us today, including one guest.  The room was set up with plenty of room between tables and everyone who brought a machine had easy access to a plug. The staff was very helpful and the only negative I heard was that the lightning wasn't great for close work

Last Saturday Ray and I delivered 27 dog beds to the Humane Society of Lake County.  We also dropped off 31 quilts, 22 pillowcases, 8 drawstring backpacks, and 8 zipper bags to the Shepherd's Lighthouse.

Show and Tell:

Pat Pipa completed a fidget walker bag

and showed some baby items she crocheted for Busy Hands.

Eileen DiSanto showed a pillowcase she made.
She also finished a 2nd pillowcase during the afternoon.

Mic took the leftover fabric from the pajamas she made for family members for Christmas and created a throw quilt.

She is also making more masks for family members who have gone back to work and need more.

Ellen showed 2 completed patriotic quilts.  The tops were both made by Judy Mayer, quilted by me, and binding by Ellen.
These will both be given to Compassionate Care hospice tomorrow.

Deb Chapman showed a quilt top she completed and handed it.

Mary Ellen Boutin showed a quilt top she completed and handed in.

Jean Piccirillo tried a different approach to using ties to make a tote bag.

We were happy to see Audrey Phillips at today's meeting.  She showed a quilt she is creating on her embroidery machine for her latest grandchild.

She also drew some stick figures representing a family and scanned them into her new embroidery machine.  She plans to add these embroidered figures to the bottom of the baby quilt.

I made another drawstring backpack

and showed a Tiger quilt that I made from a kit my husband gave me for Christmas.

*****************************
During the rest of the afternoon I designed a quilt top and helped Jean design another one. I saw several other ladies select squares from the supplies I brought, so I expect some more quilt tops will come in over the next few weeks.

We received the names of the 12 kids who will be graduating from the Sheriff's Youth Ranch in May.  Ellen has been working on the duffel bags for them and she said she has at least 10 completed.  We now need to finish 12 twin size quilts for them.  I had a couple of large quilts waiting to be quilted, so we are on our way, but we could use a few more.   I will keep you posted as the number of completed quilts goes up.  We will also give them pillowcases and zip bags.  We have some on hand, but could always use a few more.

Next week we will be back at El Santiago, in the Hula Lounge room.
I will send out a reminder a day or 2 before.   In the meantime, if you want me to bring any specific supplies next week, email me.  Also, if your COVID vaccine status has changed, please let me know this as well.  The percent of club members who have received at least 1 shot of the vaccine remains as 27%, to the best of my knowledge.

Hope to see you next week.

Club Notes - February 17, 2021

We had a very active group today.  There were 14 of us at today's meeting, the most we have seen in a year.    Over half (8) of the ladies present have received at least one vaccine shot.  I have heard from 16 of our members who have received the vaccine, which is about 28% of our membership and 52% of the ladies who came to most meetings before COVID.

If you have received the vaccine and haven't let me know yet, please drop me a note.

Last week I asked if anyone knew what happened to Eileen Navikas.  I'm happy to report I received the answer that she has moved back to Pennsylvania to be near her family.

My other good news this week is that I have had a request for 8 twin quilts and 20 child quilts from Shepherd’s Lighthouse in Belleview.  I pulled a bunch of quilts out of storage after today's meeting.  Tomorrow I will look at them and wash the ones I believe will fit.  This depletes our store of twin quilts, so I am only checking the smaller ones for the best child quilts.  We will need 12 more twin quilts (minimum 55 x 72) to give to the Sheriff's Youth Ranch 2021 graduates in May.

We also have enough dog beds to make a delivery so I'm hoping to do that within a few days too.

Two of our members stopped in just for drop-offs and pickups.  Laura Tomich came in to pick up some pillowcase kits.  She thanked everyone for the get-well card. She is still undergoing extensive treatments and prayers are appreciated.

Carol Thurston came in to drop off a dog bed, fabric and batting and get some dog beds sleeves.

Show and Tell:

After the last meeting I had 22 pillowcase sets ready to be sewn. I gave them to Diana Gosselin and she returned them all completed a week later.

Eileen DiSanto turned in 2 pillowcases she finished.

Jean Piccirillo made a tie tote, some pillowcases,

and showed a piece she quilted.

Judy Mayer made 3 stuffed toys.

Ceal Pedersen showed the quilt top she made from ties in our stash.

Charlotte Cecillio made a couple of stuffed frogs.

Brenda Severa showed a bunch of UFO's that she finally completed - a basket, a table runner and a wall hanging.

She also sewed a quilt top that was laid out 2 weeks ago (I believe by Deb Chapman and Mary Ellen Boutin).  Brenda spent the afternoon pinning it, using the pool noodle method.

Mic Pickard showed a tie tote she made

and a towel she decorated.  Her daughter created the design in paint and Mic transferred it to printable fabric, which she then appliqued unto the towel.

Deb Chapman  finished 2 quilt blocks from the quilt block challenge I gave out last month.

Ellen Hein showed one of the duffle bags she has completed.

She also showed an alphabet quilt, which was the first quilt she ever made.

She then showed 2 patriotic quilts that she finished the binding on.  Judy Mayer handed these 2 in at our December 16th meeting. I quilted them and gave them to Ellen to bind in January.

She also worked on the binding of this quilt from our assembly line.

Lastly, she showed a quilt she is working on for her grandson.  This is a work in progress, which will be delivered before we get a chance to see the completed quilt.

Bev Minnerly showed the 1st quilt she ever finished,

some zipper bags, 2 towels she added the hanging sections to, and a pillowcase.

Diane Placek turned in a pillowcase.

I showed a small purse I made using Kristine Poor's Explorer Bag pattern.  I also made 7 draw-string backpacks, using up a bunch of home decor fabric, the skinny parts of men's ties, and blocks from our stash for pockets.

*****************
Everyone got to work for the rest of the afternoon.  Ellen finished binding a couple of our assembly-line quilts.  Deb and Mary Ellen were busy designing another quilt top.  I saw Mic and Ceal taking ties apart, preparing them for another quilt.  Everyone else was working on various stuff, but I didn't get around to see what they were doing.  I'm sure we will see as things come back in.

I met with the El Santiago manager, Todd, to discuss the confusion regarding our room assignment for the 4th Wednesday of Jan, Feb & March.  It seems we are double-booked with the Boggy Creek Bear Ladies in the Hula lounge.  He suggested I talk to the lady in charge at Savannah, so I will go there sometime in the next 2 days.  I will let you know the result before our next scheduled meeting.

Club Notes - Feb 3, 2021

We had 10 ladies at today's meeting.  Although I didn't have any announcements today, we spent a little time talking about the status of COVID vaccinations among our members.  We now have 10 members who have either received the 1st shot or have an appointment next week to get their 1st shot. 4 of us have tentative appointments for the 2nd shot and 11 more are currently on waiting lists.   I encourage all of you to at least get on one of the waiting lists.  Here are two options:

Show and Tell"

Mic Pickard talked about a shower curtain she embroidered with her daughter's monogram and showed the towels she is sending to go with it.

Ellen Hein showed another duffel bag she has finished for the Sherriff's Youth Ranch 2021 graduates.

B.J. Herter showed a carrying case she made to hold her sewing tools.

Ceal Peterson continues to work on quilt blocks she is sewing together from some of the men's ties we received.

Pat Pipa made 2 stuffed toys and completed a quilt block from our quilt challenge.

By the end of the meeting Ellen Hein finished the binding on an Honor Flight quilt that I made.

********************************

We got a lot of fabric donations this week.  Some went to dog beds but there was also some usable fabric.   During the rest of the afternoon, I cut a bunch of walker bag sets, just waiting for fidget items.  What wasn't large enough for walker bags I cut for draw-string backpacks.  A new potential member cut some pillowcase bodies and matched them to suffs we had.

We don't have a room for next week, so no meeting  Feb 10th.  I will send out a reminder.  Hope to see you on Feb 17th.
