Club Notes - September 30, 2020

We had 8 ladies come out this afternoon for our sewing and social.  I got our room reservation for next year and talked about it.  It was not the same as usual, so I went to Savannah after the meeting to confirm. It seems that the Boggie Creek Bear ladies have only requested the room for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays.  That complicates our winter schedule a bit, but it's good news.  It means we get to meet every week except the 2nd week of Jan, Feb & Mar.  We will have to use the alternate room on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday's of those months, but that's a better schedule than prior years.  They will be sending me the final copy to sign via email.  Don't worry, I will let you know which room to go to in an email each week during the winter.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard showed the quilt top she and Deb have been working on with the 10" squares.

Diane Placek has been working on a bargello quilt and she showed the first completed section.

Pat Pipa has been making wine glass coasters for her granddaughter's wedding. She has completed 150 of the 200 needed to give as favors at the wedding in December.

Bev Minnerly took a stack of 3.5" squares home last week and came back with some completed 9-patch blocks.  (She needed a few more to finish the quilt pattern, so she and Ceal Pederson spent the rest of the afternoon matching up some more squares.)

She also showed us some of her mask innovations and the pattern for the vertical pleated mask she showed last week.

This shows a fabric strap with buttons she made to hook a mask to instead of ears.

This shows the basic design for the vertical pleated mask.  The rectangle is 6.5" x 9.5". The corners are cut in 3" from each corner. Sew 2-3 layers RST on the 6 seams along the long side, leaving the 2 ends open.  Turn right side out and pleat.

A box pleat is made at the center, and another pleat is made on each side of the box pleat.

Add elastic or ties to both sides and close the open seams.

Ceal Pederson took home the blocks she worked on designing last week and came back today with 2 quilt tops.

Ellen Hein made several more Christmas gift bags.

She also showed the latest 6 quilts that she finished the binding on.

I don't know what happened, but when I tried to retrieve the pictures Wednesday evening, the last 7 I took were nowhere to be found.  I asked Ellen for a pictures of her bags and laid out the quilts on my bed to retake the pictures.  Now it is Friday evening and I was going to add the new pictures.  For some unknown reason the original 7 pictures that I took Wednesday afternoon magically appeared on my computer.  I am totally baffled, but here they are:

**************************

Ellen, Mic, Pat and Suzanne brought machines today and were busy sewing some quilt tops. Diane ironed a bunch of dryer sheets that were given to us and added them to the box for future quilt blocks.  Bev and Ceal were busy designing a quilt, and I pinned 4 quilt sandwiches so I can get them quilted this week.  When I left the rec center I found my cart full with 5 dog beds, some completed pillowcases from Laura Tomich, and lots and lots of dog bed scraps that Anne Knoff left.  I filled 2 dog beds when I got home and there is probably enough for 2-3 more.

I found a cute idea for a Fall mug rug.  Since we are not doing demos yet, I am sending you all this idea in our club email.  This is something easy that you can do at home.  If you take the challenge, either bring the result for show and tell or send me a photo.  Have fun.

Club Notes - September 23, 2020

We had a good turnout today - 9 ladies came out.  Everyone was busy making use of our donated fabric.

I told those in attendance that I heard back from Skip regarding the sale of our quilts on Ebay.  The person who handles fund raising for the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch will take a few of our quilts and handle all the details of selling them on EBay.  We will start with a few and see how it goes, since they have never sold handmade quilts before.  I will provide the value estimate that we normally give to the quilt guild, which is $.05 per square inch. This is a materials only estimate, and I will make sure they now that.  They will then use this as a basis to set the EBay price and give us a donation receipt.  I will get a few quilts out of storage this week, wash them, and give them to Skip.

Show and Tell:

Pat Pipa came out today to show a quilt she completed using 3.5" squares from our stash.  She did it using the quilt as you go method.

Bev Minnerly found a new pattern for masks on YouTube.  This one has vertical pleats instead of the horizontal ones, which seems to allow more breathing room.  I have asked her to send me the link if she can locate it again and I will share it with you all.  Bev also turned in a couple of zipper bags.

Ceal Petersen returned and officially joined our club.  She took the squares that she and Ellen laid out last week and returned with a completed quilt top.  She also donated another quilt she made, using a pre-printed fabric that only required backing and quilting.

Suzanne Barron asked me to send her some of our most used patterns.  She decided to make some pillowcases and, with the leftover fabric, made a couple of zipper bags.

Ellen Hein got out her leftover Christmas fabric and made a bunch of  gift bags with draw-strings.

Deb Chapman showed her latest garden flag and one of the French Braid place mats she is making for family members who have recently moved into new homes.

Eileen DiSanto has been making a bunch of stuffed dino's and mini-teddy bears.  (Pat added faces to them with a fabric pen during the afternoon.)

I found a kit for a fun hot plate in my stash and finished it up.

Ellen also brought in 3 more of our completed assembly-line quilts.

There was one I designed,

one Ellen designed,

and an Honor flight quilt that Charlotte Cecilio put together.

****************

The rest of the afternoon was spent designing more quilt tops, ironing backings, pinning some quilt sandwiches, and processing donated scraps.  We also received 3 donated quilts and took some time to inspect them.  They are all well worn, but may be very old.  I am going to check with the donor to see if we can find out how old and Ellen is going to research if there is a market for worn, vintage quilts.  They were all lovely in their time, so we will decide later what to do with them.

That's all I have for this week.  Stay safe all.

Club Notes - September 16, 2020

We had a busy afternoon.  The 2 articles about our club in the paper over the past week generated a lot of responses.  We got a bunch of fabric donations and 2 new members.

I brought all the pillowcases, zip bags and drawstring backpacks we have collected over the past few months.  Several ladies separated out the few that are more appropriate for women and counted and measured the rest.  We sent the rest home with Bev to give to Skip for the Sheriff's Youth Ranch kids.

Show and Tell:

Charlotte Cecillio came at the start of our meeting to pick up more red, white and blue fabric and dryer sheets for the patriotic honor flight quilts she works on.  She left a stack of masks she made.

Ellen Hein brought in 3 of our assembly line quilts that she finished the binding for.

The first one Ellen designed from our 6 inch block stash and the other two were large donated quilt tops that we finished.

Bev Minnerly showed doll pants and a zipper bag she made.

Mic Pickard is making pajamas for family for Christmas and found some cute fabrics on sale at Joanns to work with.

She is also making a stuffed toy to go in each stocking.

New member Suzanne Barron showed a big tote bag she made out of a cat food bag.

Prospective member Ceal Pedersen is an experienced quilter and she brought a lap quilt to show.

I took some time this past week to finish a Giraffe tote bag I've been working on.

**********************

For the rest of the afternoon we had several projects going.  Carolyn Grasso and Suzanne worked on sorting the donations and filling a dog bed.  Mic and Debbie Chapman worked with 10" squares to design a quilt.  Ellen, Bev and Ceal designed 3 quilt tops with the box of 8" squares.  I managed to pin 4 of our quilts to get them ready for quilting. It was a very productive afternoon.

We will have more of the same next week.  If you need supplies for making stuff at home, let me know. I am still willing to deliver to your house or you can pick stuff up on Wednesdays.
