Club Notes - August 29, 2018

Although I was away last week, Pat Pipa led the meeting and sent me the following notes:

******************************************
We had a very nice meeting today with 17 girls attending.  Eileen Navikas returned to our meetings.
She hasn’t been coming because her husband passed away.  She brought some dog bed sleeves.

Show and tell:

Diana Gosselin—pillow cases

Lynn Kluczynski –two mondo bags and retreat quilt,

Ellen Hein—quilt for charity—which she will bring back when she comes to the next meeting,

Alice Meunier--quilt, pencil cases, pillowcases, table runner,

Bev Minnerly—pillowcases,

Carol Riggs—craft folder

Charlotte Cecilio—Mug Rug,

Linda Parr—jewelry holder.

Carol Riggs invited Doug Stone from the Patriot Guard Ride who spoke to us about the patches and what his group does.   A few girls signed up to get his emails.  He wants sewer to go down to Orlando Disney to help with the sewing on of these patches on to leather vests.  They will have sewing machines there to sew on the patches.   Each child will be able to get patches for the event and for the branch of service their parent was in.   This event is held in different parts of the country each year.   It is sponsored by American Airlines and several other organizations.   They kids will get three days at Disney and other events.   It is being held the being of December.

After that I show how to make a place mat with strips, which I brought all the supplies for.  Several of the members took the supplies and are going to try and make the place mats.

Ellen worked with her serger the whole meeting doing the patches and was not able to finish.  She and Nita were the only one there with sergers.   Nita’s serger was working.   Several of the members helped Elllen cut the patches apart and trim them.   The finished ones Carol took and Ellen is going to finish the others at home.

*******************************
Next week we will look at how to make place mats using border fabrics.  I will send out more info in a couple of days when I catch up after being away for a week.

Club Notes - Aug 22, 2018

I got to today's club meeting late, but Pat Pipa had everything organized and took the show and tell photos. She sent me the photos and I have added them here.

I was happy to see an old friend join us today. Carol Planck is regaining her health after her lung transplant last year and is ready to get back into club activities.  We are very happy to see her out and about again, and maybe we can convince her to do  some demos on how to add bling to our projects.  😁

Show and tell:

As noted above, these are cryptic notes from the sign in log since I arrived late.  The pictures on the blog will show more detail.

Bev Minnerly  brought dog beds and Halloween wall hangings in progress

Carol Riggs showed a bed runner, mug rugs, and some proposed craft projects for our club.

Carol Planck showed a 5D Diamond Painting Clock, 2 bags embellished and several shirts   These are all done with crystal work.

She also showed a crystal art piece in progress, which is a photo of her grandsons that she had made into the base for crystal art.

When I arrived I showed a machine embroidered Cherry Blossom wall hanging I have been working on for the past few months.

**********************

Today's effort was charity sewing and free sewing.

Next week's project will be hemming or surging badges for kids coming to Florida for the  Patriot Guard Ride.  I will not be there but I hope a bunch of you will come out to put the finishing touches on badges for these kids who have lost a parent in service to our country.

Club Notes - Aug 15, 2018

Today we had a visitor from Villagers for Veterans.  He came to talk to us about the project they are raising funds to build a smart home here in The Villages for injured veteran SGT Pam Kelly.  They have patriotic bracelets for sale and many of those in attendance purchased one.  The group is planning a fundraising "Walk for Pam" event October 13th at the Polo Grounds.  See the link above if you are interested.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard started us off, showing a reversible apron she made for her daughter.  Each side matches a set of place mats Mic made for her earlier.

Mic also showed a set of Redskins towels and potholders.  I think I heard these are for her daughter's brother-in-law.

We had lots of pillowcases come in this week.

Ellen Hein, Bev Minnerly, Donna Rissman,  Eileen DiSanto, Sue Campbell, and  Diana Gosselin all brought some in.

I counted 35 to go to Ryan's Case for Smiles and another 10 I set aside for the Ocala Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center.

Eileen Hein, Sue Campbell and I also showed our finished project carriers from last week's demo.

Bev Minnerly made some dog beds sleeves to add to our stash and some doll pillows.

Alice Meunier showed a beautiful quilt she completed.

*********************
After Show and Tell I did a short demo on how to make a cute, easy mug rug that is personalized with your own choice of motif in the center.  I also demonstrated a fussy cutting template I purchased from Martelli Enterprises in Pensacola.  For those who wanted more info, I've included a link above.

Next week is our monthly charity week.  I will be late getting in but the meeting will start as usual.  There are plenty of pillowcase matched sets to sew together, quilt blocks that can be sorted by color and organized into scrappy quilt tops, and red, white and blue strips that can be sewn onto dryer sheet blocks.  Please remember to place a 1.5 inch white strip diagonally on the dryer sheet to start so we can eventually match blocks into a symmetrical quilt.

I also always have the center blocks for Cornerstone Hospice Veterans quilts available for anyone who would like to make one of these 36" square patriotic quilts.

See you next week.

Club Notes - August 8, 2018

It looks like summer might be coming to an end.  We had a few members come who we haven't seen all summer.  Along with a few new members ( including one added today) we had 22 ladies show up today.

Donna Rissman led today's demo of a project carrier.  The instructions are attached to my email

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard is a new member who has quickly gotten into the swing.

She showed a finished quilted hug shawl made from stuff she found in our fabric stash,

a walker bag she made for a friend,

and a bag she made for her friend's caregiver.

Ellen Hein showed a baby quilt she made from a panel found in our stash,

a pillow case,

and a huge bag she got from a bakery up north and decorated for donation. (I'll be filling it with quilts and stuff for the Ocala shelter).

Sue Campbell made 3 pillowcases with fabric some little boys will love.a bag she made to

Eileen DiSanto showed a flat doll house she made and a wine bag she altered and embellished to hold it  The house is a quilt and there are little stuffed dolls to inhabit it.

Pat Pipa showed the table runner she finished from last week's project.

Donna Rissman also made a table runner, but hers will glow in the dark.

She also showed a  wall hanging made from New York Beauty blocks on water fabric, against a sanding beach with some cute crabs

Diana Gosselin took a bunch of the donated fabric we got a few weeks ago home and came back today with 44 pillowcases!  Since the fabric came from Karen King at A Quilting Pallet, the pillowcases will be going back there for Ryan's Case for Smiles.

Bev Minnerly showed some doll clothes she made, this time for her granddaughter's doll.

Lynn  showed her finished winter table runner and a wall hanging she finished.

Debbie Ardman showed her lovely completed Quilted Hug Shawl.

Nella Rose showed a cat Christmas wall hanging she finished.

I showed the table runner I finished

and a quilt I made for a great-niece.

***************
As always we got more fabric donated today. Thanks to all the ladies who sorted through it, filling a few dog beds and separating out the good stuff.  Also, a special thanks to Sue and Mic for taking fabric home with them to cut into blocks.

I also brought the bolts of fabric I received from the distributor I told you about last week.
Several ladies went to work cutting some of that into pillowcase bodies and matching cuffs.  There was one bolt that contained panels to make stuffed dolls.  I put that aside and will plan a project day for us to sew and stuff these dolls for Christmas presents for a charity.

Next week I will show you how to make some easy mug rugs.  I'll send a separate email with the supply list.

Hope to see you next week.
