Club Notes - May 30, 2018

With the heavy rain this morning, I was thinking I might be the only one at El Santiago this afternoon, but I was proved wrong.  There were 14 of us and the rain held off all afternoon.  Once again we were inundated with donations of fabric scraps and an assortment of thread, a number of small scissors,  and other stuff.  Thanks to several friends who helped sort through some of it.  We filled 5 dog beds and I still brought home 3 bags that need to be checked.

Since there was some confusion in the past regarding items to be donated to the Sheriff's Youth Ranch vs the Ocala Domestic Violence Center, I now have a 2nd bag out to accept items.  Anything you would like to go to the Youth Ranch should be placed in the blue Belks bag. Items placed in the red bag with Christmas sayings on it will be donated to the Ocala Shelter.

Show and Tell:

As I predicted, lots of ducks were completed this past week.

Pat Pipa, Eileen DiSanto and I brought our ducks show.

B.J. Herter couldn't make it today, so she gave me her duck yesterday.

Donna Rissman sent me a photo of her duck.

They all came out so cute.

Carol Riggs made a pillow sham and a set of oven mitts with some Marine fabric for a friend.

Diane Placek showed a chalkboard placemat and a tote bag she made as gifts.

Bev Minnerly showed her latest doll clothes.

Marti Rhyne showed a reading pillow she made on her embroidery machine.

She also shared the fun she had teaching her adult son to sew items for his baby-to-be.

Alice Meunier showed a couple of reading pillow cases she made and a charity quilt.

Joanne Sheahan made 3 pillowcases for donation.

I showed a place mat I made to use for today's project and a horse themed quilt I made for my nephew and his wife (who have a small horse ranch in New York).

We've made a couple of changes to our upcoming project schedule.   After studying th Quilted Hugs project, Lynn Kluczynski decided it needs more than one week to complete, so I've moved it to a later time when we can spend 2 weeks on it.  Here is the schedule as it now stands:

I will send out a supply list for next week's project as son as i get it.  I will also send out the Quilted Hugs instructions in a separate email, so you will have time to prepare the starting piece ahead of time.

If you are working on a twin fidget quilt for the Bayview nursing, please try to have the top done by out June 13th.  We can work on adding the fidget items that day since I will be bringing fidget items.

Club Notes - May 23, 2018

Yesterday was a lot of fun.I expect to see a flock of baby ducks fly in to next week's meeting.  The crazy thing is I still can't find where the pieces of mine are hiding, so I am just going to have to make another one.

My main announcement for this week had to do with a call I received from the activities coordinator at Bayview Nursing home in Eustis.  She was wondering if we could make 5 twin size quilts with fidget attachments for some of her patients would would benefit from these.  I proposed the project to the group and 3 ladies stepped up to the challenge, either using some of the blocks we have on hand or their own stash.  I found a cute panel at the Allamanda chapter give-away table on Tuesday and will be combining it with some fabric I got at an estate sale to make one myself.  So I think we need one more volunteer.

As I said yesterday, you can take a box of pre-cut blocks from our stash and, if you want to add sashing, take some of the white fabric we have for that.  If you bring in a twin size quilt top we will work together to add fidget items.  I will then supply batting and backing if you need it.  If you are not comfortable with quilting and binding the quilt, I will do that finishing work.

June 13th is already on our project calendar as a day to make fidget walker bags, so I will have all the fidget stuff at that meeting.  We will shoot for that date to have the quilt tops done.

Show and Tell

Carol Thurston started us off by showing pillowcases she made for the Ocala shelter.

Lynn Kluczynski showed the beginnings of a quilted hug shawl, before it is trimmed to shape.  This will be our June 6th project, so you may want to prepare either fabric strips or blocks ahead of time.  You can use some of the fabric we have in our stash for this, just take what you need next week.   I have been studying some images on Pinterest, and it appears that you need to piece something to 66.5" x 72". (Lynn, correct me if this is wrong.)

B.J. Herter showed a quilt she finished for the Sheriffs Youth Ranch.

Eileen DiSanto finished a cancer Patient's cap from last week's project and a pretty tote bag.

Pat Pipa made some cancer patient caps and showed 2 fiber art pieces she made after a class on this at the Allamanda quilt chapter.

Ellen Hein made some child patient caps and a boys quilt for the Sheriffs Youth Ranch.

Bev Minnerly also finished 2 cancer patient caps.

Donna Rissman showed her finished casserole carrier. (She acknowledged a little help from B.J.)

Laura Tomich came to deliver 2 cancer patient caps she made.  She has not been feeling well all winter and is now going to Houston for a second opinion regarding her bones and joints.  Please keep her in your prayers.

I made a small pile of cancer patient caps.

Carol Riggs showed some scarfs that could possibly be a future project.  A neighbor of hers teaches how to dye these silk scarfs and is willing to hold a class for us.  I will send out a separate email to find out how many would be interested in this project.  It would cost $20 per person. Depending on how many people sign up, it would be either at one of our meetings or in the instructor's home.

Next week Carol Thurston will be showing us how to make a zipper pouch out of a placemat.  I will sent out a supply list in a later email.

Have a great week!

Club Notes - May 16, 2018

We had fun today learning how to make several different style caps for cancer patients.  I will send out the directions in a separate email.

We heard that Jane Swafford has been released from rehab and is home with her sister Sue.  Jane, please remember we all continue to think about you and hope you will be able to join us again one day soon.

As usual, we received lots of fabric this week.  This time we got a bag full of usable shirts, which I plan to give to the Saint Vincent DePaul monthly collection. Most of the rest was all scrap and we managed to fill 3 dog beds.

Show and Tell:

Last week's demo was well received.  There were several Mega Pinnie's completed.

Lu added a thread catcher to hers.  She also made a 2nd one as a gift for a friend and attached the thread catcher with velcro to make it optional.

Bev added several small pockets to hers to hold the tools she uses for making doll clothes.

Eileen showed her completed Mega Pinnie.

I inserted a piece of cardboard in the bottom of mine to make it sit flatter.

Lu Karatzas also made a bunch of microwave bowls and showed some fabric postcards she made a few years back.  (She will give a demo on these when she returns to The Villages in the fall.)

Laura Tomich made a cute jacket and showed a purse she designed for travel.

Carol Riggs loves her embroidery machine.  She embroidered some shirts for a Maj Jong friend and also showed some embroidered hats made by her mentor.

Pat Pipa finished several projects from prior weeks, including bowl buddies and towel hangers.  She also made a quilt from donated fabric.

Eileen made a bunch of bowl buddies in addition to her mega pinnie.

Ellen Hein was inspired by working with Donna Rissman last week and finished her casserole carrier (which was in her UFO pile).

Linda Parr showed a landscape bag she made on her embroidery machine.  It will be donated to local foster kids this December.

Mary Nazgiewicz made a pillowcase and 66 dryer sheet blocks.  (I think we can start looking at making a quilt from these soon.)

I took a bolt of strong fabric from our donation staff and made 10 more duffle bags for the Sheriff's Youth Ranch.

I also finished the quilt that Donna Rissman sewed the top for and a 2nd quilt that I had some fun with using half-hexies from donated fabric.

For today's demo, Nita showed us how to make caps for cancer patients.  She shared several different patterns.  We had lots of t-shirt fabric to work with and I expect some of these to come back next week.
************
Next week  we will try a fun project - a stuffed toy duck.   I will send the pattern out separately.  You can make this for a child you love or make one to donate to the Ocala Shelter.
