Club Notes - Nov 2, 2022

 Thanks to Mic for running the meeting in my absence.  And thanks to everyone for the cards, balloons, and good wishes.  We are so fortunate to have such good friends. It looks like it will be at least a few weeks before I can join you again.  I hope you will all continue sewing, creating beauty, and socializing together in my absence.

I don't have notes on what happened at last week's meeting, but Mic did give me the photos. They at the bottom of this note.

This week I sent all our 3.5" squares with Mic.  If you take a bunch of coordinating square, maybe mixed light and dark or with white ones, here are some things you could make:

- 9-patch quilt  blocks

- other combinations to make a quilt top

-16 patch blocks that can be made into tote bags

- 3 by 4 blocks that can be turned into small zipper bags

Use your imagination.

Club Notes - October 26, 2022

We had a fun Halloween party this afternoon.  For a change, as a thank you for all the work members have put into supporting our charities, we had the food catered by Mission BBQ. The food was excellent, and I would highly recommend them.  Several ladies brought desserts to round off the meal and they were all great too.

There were 26 ladies attending the party, plus Mic brought her daughter as a guest.  After enjoying the 1^st round of food, I challenged everyone with a bit of trivia.  Our friend Doug, who manages the rec center front desk and helps us all get our stuff in every week, joined us for the trivia. Four ladies managed to get 19 right answers out of the 28 questions and earned the first set of prizes.

We took time for the 50/50 and show and tell next.  The afternoon was rounded out with several rounds of Halloween Bingo.

Show and Tell: 

Ceal Pedersen showed a baby quilt she made 

and a bunch of stuffed toys she painted the faces on.

Louise Stem showed a valance she made for her husband’s office 

and some quilt blocks she made for prayer quilts for her friends back in Maryland.

Eileen DiSanto showed the quilt square she finished.

Deb Chapman showed the 8 point star block she made.

Kathryn Jeter showed several strip squares she made. 

 She also showed 2 tree skirts she made on her embroidery machine.

Ellen Hein finished the binding on 2 of Deb Chapman’s quilts. 

She then showed the 60 degree triangle table runner she finished 

and a quilt she completed for her grandson.

Brenda Severa showed the fabric box she made.

Bev Minnerly made a baby outfit for a new member of her family.

Judy Mayer made 2 tote bags.

Carolyn Grasso showed a quilt top she created from our 10 inch square stash.

Mary Ellen made 2 zipper bags

Audrey Phillips embroidered some lace angels as gifts for some medical staff who helped her through some dental work.

Mic and her daughter Andrea showed their joint project.  Mic upholstered chairs and her daughter painted a table to go with the chairs.

Thanks to all the ladies who helped with the clean-up at the end of the afternoon.  As always we were able to leave the room as clean as we found it.

Next week Mic will be running the meeting.  She will bring the fabric strips so you can work on some more strip squares.  I am having back surgery on November 1^st so will be off that week.  I plan to be back with you all on the 9^th.  Your prayers/positive thoughts for my surgeon’s hands would be greatly appreciated.

Club Notes - October 19, 2022

 There were 16 ladies attending this afternoon’s meeting. I reported that we delivered 16 walker bags to Helpertunity and 32 dog beds to Humane Society of Lake County last week.

Last week I proposed that we make a monetary donation to 3 of our charities – The Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, Project S.O.S. (Save Our Soldiers), and the Ocala Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center.  I plan to deliver checks to them along with some of our non-monetary gifts before Thanksgiving.

 Show and Tell:

Louise Stem showed a hand embroidered needlework case.

Laura Paulk has finally returned to The Villages after a long period of caring for her grandchildren.  She showed a quilt she made from the fabric of all the COVID masks she made for her family over the last few years.

  The back consists of bandanas purchased for her grandson during Grand Canyon trips.

Deb Chapman showed 2 table runners she made.  Her husband liked the first one so much he asked for one for his table.

Brenda Severa showed a Christmas bag she made in 2009.  She just rediscovered it when looking for supplies for this week’s project. 😉

B.J. Herter showed the clutch purse she finished for donation and a ghost pillow made with glow in the dark fabric.

Ellen Hein showed 2 quilts she completed the binding on. 

 

The first was from a set of squares found in our donation pile already sewn together.  I added some squares and a thin blue border, B.J. added a border of smaller squares, and Ellen applied the binding after I backed and quilted it.

The second was Deb Chapman’s block/row of the month quilt, finished with embroidery edge-to-edge quilting.

Liz Manzione showed 2 scrap  strip blocks she made for our challenge.

Bev Minnerly made 2 star blocks from last week’s demo 

and a baby outfit for her grand-niece

After show and tell, B.J. showed everyone how to make a reversible fabric box.  I’ve attached a copy of her handout.  This was a popular project -most of those in attendance selected fabric and batting to make one of these and a couple were finished before the end to the meeting.

Next week is our Halloween party. 24 ladies have signed up and I ordered food for 26, so there is still time to add your name if you decide to attend.    I told everyone that I am currently working on an insurance issue with the caterer, so things might change.  I will keep everyone posted.

Club Notes October 12, 2022

We are continuing to welcome some of our snowbird friends back to The Villages.   There were 21 ladies attending this afternoon’s meeting.

At the start I talked a little about our sale last Saturday and our current financial status.  Our charity fund is flush now, due to our sales income and the fact that Allamanda paid for our latest bolt of batting (90” by 40 yds).  I proposed that we make a monetary donation to 3 of our charities – The Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, Villagers for Veterans, and the Ocala Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center.  Those in attendance agreed.  If any of you have any objections, please let me know.

Show and Tell:

 and a walker bag.

Louise Stem is continuing her unpacking.

 She showed her very first hand embroidery 

 and a T-Shirt quilt she made.

and showed a notebook cover she made.

Candy DeGarmo made a walker bag.

Liz Manzione finished a fleece blanket.

After show and tell Ceal showed us how to make the 8 point star block, with variations called the LeMoyne star, and the Ohio star..  She also gave us the history of the block and mentioned a few other names for the same design.  She handed out a diagram sheet showing some of the different ways this block can be made 

and showed a couple of her quilts that she made that show different ways the block can be laid out.

I brought some 6”, 6.5” and 8.5”  squares for members to choose as starters to try to make these blocks and several ladies took some to work with.

Next week B.J. Herter will be showing us how to make reversible fabric boxes.  I will send out the supply list in a separate email.
