Club Notes - July 27, 2022

We had 16 members in attendance this afternoon, plus 1 guest/potential member.  . I appreciate your understanding of our break last week, just trying to keep our group safe.

I brought only a small amount of our stash today, just enough for current projects.  As many of you know, I am dealing with a severe case of sciatica and am currently limited in how much I can lift.  I will try to bring as much as I can for each future week’s project.  I am also going through our stash and identifying fabric put aside for fidget walker bags or not usable for anything I am aware of.  I hope to bring a box of this type each week to offer them up and eliminate them from storage.  What is left will either be put into dog beds or be donated to Goodwill.

I got a large bag of fabric scraps from Allamanda yesterday.  Mic took these home to process into dog beds.   We did receive some large pieces of fabric from the Villages Quilt Guilt  that are earmarked for charity projects. I think these were unsold fabric from Sew Together.  Laura Tomich matched a bunch of these and took them home to make pillowcases.

I received the application for a table at The Villages Quilt Guild Fall Craft Sale yesterday.  The price for a table will be $10 and I will submit the application to sell our crafts.    The tables are available only for any member of the guild, so I am applying as a member of the Allamanda Chapter.  The sale will be held at Savannah Recreation Center on October 8th, from 9AM to 2PM.  I will be asking for volunteers to help on the day.  All proceeds will go into our charity fund.   Since this fund is doing well, I am thinking of making a cash donation to one of our charities in November.  We will talk about this at a future meeting.

Show and Tell

Pat Pipa showed microwave bowls

 and a quilt

Diane Placek made some fidget walker bags

and a quilt top for her church prayer group.

Ceal Pedersen made a patriotic lap quilt.

Donna Rissman made some pin cushions from the fabric left by a friend who recently died.

 She also made a Gnome.

B.J. brought a patriotic quilt top she made using the dryer sheet base method.  She also broight  a quilt back that she showed a few weeks ago, to show the names of the squares.

Ellen Hein brought back 9 quilts that were in our pipeline that she completed the binding on,

Eileen DiSanto stuffed a cat and

showed a baby quilt she made for a new addition to her family.

Mic Pickard took time to make a new snap-purse for herself.

Liz Manzione made a bunch of stuffed dinosaurs.

Sue Campbell finished a set of 4 Santa placemats.

I showed a Peter Rabit soft book I put together

and a quilt I made for my niece’s 50th birthday.

Today’s demo was on how to make a casserole carrier for the many potlucks we seem to have here in The Villages.  I had a couple cut out for those who were willing to make one for our sale in October and all those kits were taken.  I will send out the instructions in a separate email.

It looked like a group at a back table were working on stuffed toys for the rest of the afternoon.

I had to leave early for a doctor’s appointment, so many thanks to Mic for putting everything away and cleaning up.

Next week I had us scheduled to continue making microwave bowls and baked potato zapper bags, because there seemed to be interest in continuing these.   If you want to make these for yourselves or as gifts, I will set a price for the Wrap N Zap batting to reimburse the charity fund.  If you want to make some for our October sale, the batting will be available for use.

I think that’s all  for now.  Hope to see you next Wednesday.

Club Notes - July 13, 2022

Today we had our summer potluck party. There was plenty of good food and lots of fun.  I gave out sewing trivia questions and most of the questions were pretty easy.

Yesterday I delivered 2 patriotic quilts to Compassionate Care.  The only other news is that Pat Pipa fell so she was not feeling up to coming today.

Show and Tell:

While everyone was finishing the trivia I showed 2 sets of microwave bowls and 2 microwave potato bags I made.

Ceal Pedersen showed a bag full of stuffed toys that she painted eyes on.

This dog is not one of our patterns, Ceal made this one.

Deb Chapman showed an apron made by a new friend.  This looks like a great, easy pattern for us to try.

Jean Peters showed the walker bag she has been working on.

Eileen DiSanto made 2 microwave bowls.

Carolyn Grasso showed a stuffed hedgehog that she is working on.

For the rest of the afternoon we played sewing bingo.  My new bingo card design has the terms unique to each column, just like the numbers are in traditional bingo.  That made it easier to find the terms called and made the bingo games go faster.  Since there were only 10 of us today, it also made it easier to win a prize.  We had lots of fun and everyone liked the new format bingo.

I introduced several types of fabric and types of pre-cuts in the trivia and bingo.  This resulted in some questions, so I am attaching 2 documents to my email, explaining these for your reading pleasure.

Next week I will show everyone how to make a casserole carrier.  I will send the supply list in a separate email.

We also talked about the fact that there is a box of cut sets of walker bags in the closet, waiting to be sewn.  Several ladies said they would make one so I will bring the box out next week for anyone who would like to try, along with the instructions.

Hope to see you next week.

Club Notes - July 6, 2022

We had a small group this afternoon, but lots of activity.  We welcomed 2 new members to our fold.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard is experimenting with her embroidery machine,

She found some Halloween fabric and a fun ghost embroidery pattern for this bag.

Ceal Pedersen made patriotic quilt

and showed the stuffed toys she painted eyes on.

This included Donna Rissman’s experiment which morphed from scary to cute with the eyes painted.

Deb Chapman showed her completed patriotic place mats,

her quilt row of the month,

and a cute, reversible hat she made.  (I’m hoping she will be able to give us a demo for the hat in late August.)

Eileen DiSanto made a 3 square bag for her sister.

I showed 3 zipper bags I made

and a basket of cats.  The cats and basket were
from a pre-printed fabric I found in our donations.

Donna Rissman couldn’t be at today’s meeting so she dropped off the quilts she completed the binding on at my house on Sunday.

Two of the completed quilts used quilt tops Ellen Boutin handed in before she left for the summer.

Carolyn Grasso created the third quilt top from some unusual fabrics in our big block stash.

For today’s project I showed how to make microwave bowls and a bag to make baked potatoes (and a few other things) in the microwave.   I will send the patterns out in a separate email.

To make these I brought in a bolt of Wrap N Zap batting, a bolt of muslin, 8” and 9” squares, and some larger fabric pieces from our donations. In addition to making these for ourselves or as gifts, we can sell sets of these at the October sale. There was so much enthusiasm for this project that we actually emptied the box of large fabric pieces I brought and we were able to consolidate the 4 bins of fabric  Mic brought into 3 bins.

This was such an effective use of our fabric that Mic and I decided to schedule this project again in August. .  The muslin is used for the lining of the potato bags, and we still have plenty of that.   The Wrap N Zap was all used up this afternoon so I am going to order more from our charity budget.

Next week we will take a break and have our Summer Pot Luck.   As always, I will bring the plates, cups, etc. and some ice tea. Bring a dish to share if you can, but don’t stress about it  There is always plenty of food.   Don’t forget to bring 25 pennies, buttons, or anything else you can use to mark our bingo cards, and a pencil for trivia.

Hope to see you next week.
