Club Notes - December 18, 2019

Our last meeting of the year was a busy, informative, and joyful one.   Mic Pickard came to my house before the meeting to help me get all the donated items to El Santiago.  We filled both her van and mine, and only brought about half of the items in.  I had a number of bags of clothing donations that I only received on Tuesday and hadn't had time to go through.  Everyone pitched in to sort and count the items so we could report the value as closely as possible.  This is necessary both for the receiving charity to maintain their status and for us to report.  As many of you know, I report everything I donate to the Quilting Guild of the Villages via the Allamanda chapter.  I also encourage any members who belong to other quilt chapters to report their contributions through their own chapters and let me know so items don't get reported twice.

I just want to thank those who contributed to the Wildwood Soup Kitchen charity request.  Between Sewing 'N More, Allamanda, Khaki, and the Quilting B's, we were able to give them 31 quilts, 25 blankets, 69 pillowcases, about $1,800 worth of used clothing and toys, and a lot of miscellaneous items totaling a value of about $12,850.

I thought you'd like to know a little about where your contributions went.

The woman who is coordinating the efforts to help these people, Barbara McManus, came to the Sewing N More club yesterday to pick up the donated items and talk to us about the situation.  The people living in the Econo Lodge are not unemployed, They all have low paying jobs in local stores or fast food places.  Many of these are part time jobs that don't include benefits.  They live from paycheck to paycheck, and when extra expenses come up, they may not be able to pay the $50 a day to stay in the hotel.  When that happens, they have to move out and sleep in the woods until they can afford a room again.  The rooms only have the typical microwave and small refrigerator, so the ability to keep any food is limited. That's where the soup kitchen comes in.

Another fact I did not know before - Sumter County does not have any homeless shelters.  I double checked this and the nearest ones are in Lake or Marion counties, and they seem to deal only with people who have some specific issue like substance abuse, not poor, hard-working people.

Barbara is the Home Delivery, Driver Coordinator.  This year she started a go fund me campaign and raised enough money to pay the rent on 24 rooms at the hotel for 2 weeks. That will cover Christmas and New Year's weeks for these poor families, so they can use their meager income for some other needs. After that, they are on their own again.

So, thanks again, from the bottom of my heart.  If you want to do more, the link to the organization's web page is above.

In regular club news, every year I give a little gift to the person or persons who attended the most meetings throughout the year.  This year there was a 4-way tie.  I gave Pat Pipa and Bev Minnerly their gifts (embroidered bookmarks) last week Mic Pickard got hers this week (a club name badge).  The 4th person is away and will get hers when she returns.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard made a cute little apron and matching kitchen towels for a friend's little daughter.  She also made 2 lovely Christmas stockings.

Deb Chapman showed an ornament she made.

Bev Minnerly finished the tote she was making for her neighbor.

Pat Pipa made totes, zipper bags and backpacks for our charity

Eileen DeSanto made pillowcases for our charity and got a little creative with fabric that wasn't quite big enough.

Kiki Mitracos made 2 child's bibs, Pillowcases, potholders, a pillow cover and table toppers.

I showed 3 quilts.  The first was one Lu Karatzas gave me last week and I backed and quilted.

The second was on Diane Placek gave me on Sunday.  She made this one from fabric she took from our donation stash, and I quilted it.

The third one I made by building around some of our orphan blocks.

We now have 3 weeks off for the holidays.  Our next meeting will be on January 15th and it will be in our winter room, still in El Santiago, but in the room next door, the Beach Club room.  Our project will be Hospice Veterans' quilts. I will send out reminders.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful, Happy New Year.

Club Notes - Dec 11, 2019

Lots of great food and fun this afternoon.  Thank you all for the great Christmas gift.  It is nice to know my efforts with the club are so appreciated.

The main announcement today was that I got the info for the annual bus trip to the Sheriff's Youth Ranch.  It will be on Saturday, Feb 22nd.  The flyer is attached to this week's email.  If you would like to go along and see the ranch we support, email me by Jan 15th and I will submit a list.  Cost is $25.

Show and Tell:

Kiki Mitracos showed 2 bibs, some potholders, and some pillowcases she made.

Eileen Di Santo made Christmas Stocking mug rugs for her neighbors.

B.J. Herter showed a shirt apron she made and 2 children's quilt tops.

Pat Pipa made 2 large totes, 2 back packs, and a bunch of zipper bags.

Ellen Hein finished a Hospice quilt, a gift bag and a kid's pillow

Lu Karatzas crocheted a hat and scarf for the doll Bev Minnerly showed last week.

Deb Chapman made a stack of microwave bowls.

Bev Minnerly made 2 adult bibs and a bag she is working on as a gift.

Aileen Lee made 8 cat hammocks.

I showed 2 quilts. The pink one started with a set of 9 blocks already sewn together in our orphan block pile and I just added more around it.

The  other is a 2 sided quilt that was in my UFO pile because I had problems with it when I made it 6 years ago and decided to fix it up for the Wildwood cause.

After show and tell I challenged the group with some Christmas trivia and we played several games of December Holiday Bingo.

There will be no demo next week.  It will be show and tell and free sew day.  This will be the last day to hand in any items you have for the homeless families being sponsored by the Wildwood Food Pantry.  Remember, in addition to crafted items, they will also appreciate used clothing and personal items.  Thanks to Khaki Quilters, Quilting B's, and Allamanda for their help in this project.  The ladies from this organization will be coming to pick up all our donated items between 2:30-3PM that afternoon.  I hope many of you will be able to be there.

Club Notes - Dec 4, 2019

We had a great turnout this afternoon, including 2 new members!  This is good news for now, but I am watching out numbers to make sure we don't exceed capacity.

I am going to split this week's email into 2 parts, one for the charity update and the 2nd for regular show and tell and club info.  This blog post will contain both.

We started by talking about the Wildwood Soup Kitchen donation project.  As of today, 3 quilting chapters have joined our effort - Allamanda, Khaki, and Quilting B's.  Each chapter is contributing what we can.  I will send out an inventory update after next week.  There are 35 adults and 19 children staying in the 24 rooms they are subsidizing.
10 boys (1-2, 1-7, 1-9, 2-10, 2-11, 15, 17) 9 girls (1- 18 month, 1-5, 2-8, 1-10, 1-11, 13, 17, 1?)
11 dogs, 4 cats.

Here is a suggested list of what is needed:

Twin Size quilts (Min 55" x 72", Optimal 65" x 88"
(We have enough baby quilts.)
Pillowcases
Zip bags, totes, large drawstring bags/backpacks to use as suitcase substitutes

In addition to crafted items, donations of gently used clothes, personal care items (soap, shampoo, shaving items, toothbrushes, toothpaste, tampons, etc.) are appreciated.

We have stuffed toys to give to the kids 10 and under, but any ideas for the older kids such as games (Nothing that needs batteries) would be welcome.

I am also going to give them beds for the dogs and cats. Pet food is probably also appreciated.

Two ladies from Wildwood Organization will be coming to pick up the items we collect at our Dec 18th meeting. I've asked them to come between 2:30-3PM that day so we will have time to get the last of the items donated catalogued and organized.  I am also going to notify The Daily Sun, in case they want to cover this and give the Wildwood Soup Kitchen some press.

We had a full slate of Show & Tell this week:

Mic Pickard embroidered some towels and made candy bags for her grandkids, and placemats for herself.

Mic also brought 3 pillowcases made by Sue Campbell.

Pat Pipa made some zipper bags

Eileen DiSanto made 2 stuffed toys

Charlotte Cecilio donated a blanket and 2 more drawstring backpacks.

She also did another set of patriotic dryer sheet blocks and a placemat for her son.

Lu Karatzas made photo ornaments for her newest grandson and donated a quilt top.

Diane Placek showed a baby quilt for her newest family member.

Bev Minnery brought 3 pillowcases, an adult bib, and pajamas for a doll.

Kiki Mitracos made 2 small zippered couch pillow cases, some placemats, zipper bags, and 2 potholders.

Ellen Hein heeded the call for donations for Wildwood by finishing 29 fleece blankets!  She also made several sets of clothes for her grandchildren.

Carol Thurston made a kids quilt.

Linda Marshall embroidered 2 pillowcases

Carol Riggs made some pillows for her bedroom.

I showed a pillowcase and 4 quilts.

One quilt top was made by Carol Thurston and I just added the backing and quilting.

A green top and a pink top were designed from our box of 6" blocks by several members of our group.  I sewed them together and quilted them.

I designed the 4th one from a panel I found.

Today I showed the designs for 3 mug rugs and one place mat.  Two of the mug rugs could also be made larger to make matching placemats.
