Club Notes - May 24, 2017

15 ladies braved the weather to come out this afternoon, including one new member.  Carol Coyne is also new to the Villages.  Welcome Carol.

Paul Farineau stopped by at the beginning of our meeting to pick up 4 completed Cornerstone Hospice quilts and to give us 5 more blocks.  I handed out 2 of these today and know of 2 others that are currently out there.  I've misplaced my list so if you have one of these please drop me a note and let me know.  There's no rush to get them done, I just would like to know who has them.\

Show and Tell:  (photos at  http://sewingn-more.blogspot.com/)

Bev Minnerly didn't have time to do any sewing this weekend.  She was too busy nursing a couple of orphaned baby bunnies she found in her back yard.  After several days of feeding them every 2 hours and calling all over trying to find an animal rescue that would take them, she finally got them into good hands.  Yeah Bev!

Diana Gosselin was very busy.  She came in with 13 completed pillowcases.

Lu Karatzas made 2 great back packs for the foster kids.

Ellen Hein and B.J. Herter each came in with beautiful rag quilt tote bags.  Both bags are also reversible.

Donna Rissman made 2 flower wreaths to use as wall decor.

I finished 2 pillowcases for myself and 3 for Case for Smiles.  I also made a fidget quilt, finished an honor flight quilt, and embroidered one of my old t-shirts.

During demo time, Donna Rissman gave a great explanation of how to make a t-shirt quilt.   She also provided us with a written instruction, which is attached to this email.

18 more pillow cases were handed in this week, 10 for Case for Smiles and 8 for the Ocala Shelter.  Plus more fabric was cut to work on next week.

Next week Mary Nazgiewicz is going to show us how to make a unique placemat.  I will send out a supply list in a few days when I get it from Mary.  Hope to see you all next Wednesday.

Club Notes for May 17, 2017

I think everyone had a lot of fun yesterday making pillowcases.  As I said in my earlier note, 52 pillowcases were finished. I've also heard from a couple of people who are continuing the effort at home, using some of their own stash.

FYI, this morning Ray and I delivered 26 dog beds to the Marion County Animal Shelter.  We also dropped off 3 quilts, 16 pillow cases, 8 afghans (from Busy Hands) 1 chenille bunny and misc. toiletries to the Ocala Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Shelter.

Show & Tell:

Bev Minnerly finished a small thread catcher and a Pineapple backpack for her granddaughter.  (She said this was tricky so she'll demo it later in the year.

B.J. Herter made a pillow with a cut and shuffle quilt block.

Roberta Kelsey made pillowcases and a thread catcher.

Jane Swafford made pillowcases.

Eileen DiSanto made pillowcases and her thread catcher.

Alice Meunier made 2 quilts for family babies.

Kathy Jones made pillowcases and a zip lock tote.

Laura Tomich made pillowcases and fidget quilts.

Joan Tillinger made a fidget quilt.

Nella Rose made some pillowcases.

Ellen Hein showed pillowcases that Linda Parr sewed and she serged.  She also made more diaper covers, a small and a large purse organizer, and added a band to her shirt to give it the length she needed.

I showed an honor flight quilt and 2 quilts for the Ocala Shelter, made from blocks from our donated fabric stash.

Next week Donna Rissman will be showing us how to turn t-shirts into a quilt.  This is a project I've wanted to do for years, so I'm very excited about it.  Hope to see you all next week.

Club Notes for May 10, 2017

I'm a day late getting these notes out and I apologize for that.  It has been a fuller than usual couple of days.

We had a great meeting this week.  I think at least half of the attendees were busy making fidget quilts, backpacks or dryer sheet blocks.  The rest dived in to help organize the donated supplies.  Jane and Carolyn used my Acququilt Go cutter to turn odd size fabrics into usable quilt blocks.  I got an honor flight quilt top put together and another one sandwiched, pinned and ready for quilting (with Diana's help).  Nita helped me go through and sort one box.  Several others sorted through boxes to put like fabrics together and direct the scraps into a dog bed.  I went home with 2 fewer boxes than I came with and a full doggie bed. Extra thanks to the ladies who helped me clean up, pack up, and load the van.  It all got safely back into storage Thursday afternoon.

Of course, we started as always with

Show and Tell:

Laura Tomich came with 1 finished and 1 in-progress fidget quilt.

Jane Swafford made a pillow case.  (Sorry Jane, somehow I didn't get your photo.)

Jane Motrinec finished her folded fabric wreath and made 4 pillowcases, 2 for Case for Smiles and 2 for the Ocala Shelter.

Carol Riggs made a lovely jacket and offered it for sale to raise money for Case for Smiles.

Linda Parr made a pillow case.

Susie Pendry showed her folded fabric wreath and a stuffed turtle.

I showed my finished folded fabric wreath and a Hospice quilt.

Next week we are following up on a request from our members and having a pillowcase assembly line. If you have a serger you can bring, please bring it. If you have some fabric you would like to contribute to the cause, bring that.
Some ladies can cut
Some with regular sewing machines can sew the basic pieces
Those with sergers can finish the pillow cases.
Pillow cases with Children's fabric will go to Case for Smiles.
Pillow cases with more adult fabric will go to the Ocala Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Shelter.
If you are not into making pillow cases, please come anyway.  You can always match up a pile of squares for a potential charity quilt, sew blocks together, make dryer sheet blocks, or work on your own project.  No rules.  Hope to see you next Wednesday.

Club Notes for May 3, 2017

What a great turnout today - we had 30 members show up and one possible new member checking us out.

Donna gave a great demo on how to make the beautiful folded fabric wreath.  I'm working on mine and I hope to see some more come back for show and tell next week.

I brought a bin full of donated fabric that looked good for pillow cases and about half of it went out.  I'm looking forward to seeing the pillowcases come back.

I announced that Operation Home Bound has enough patriotic place mats but would like contributions of Christmas themed place mats.  If anyone wants to make these I will get them to the coordinator.

Show and Tell:

Bev Minnerly showed her thread catcher and 2 backpacks she made for the foster kids.

Mary Nazgiewicz was stuck at home while new flooring was being installed, so she spent a full day in her sewing room.  The result was a great animal blanket, a ducky blanket for her soon to be grandchild,  a pile of doggy bed sleeves,  and a fidget quilt.

Lu Karatzas showed her finished thread catcher.

Jane Swafford made 2 pillow cases for Case for Smiles.

Audrey Philips made 4 pillowcases for Case for Smiles.

Carol Riggs showed a snowman project she will demo the week after Thanksgiving.

Donna Rissman made 2 pillow cases for Case for Smiles and finished a Cornerstone Hospice Veterans quilt.

She then showed a project she found at a quilt shop in Hudson, Fl - Quilt Til You Wilt,  Donna will demo this project later in the year.  She is also trying to get a group of people together for a road trip to this shop on Monday, May 22nd.  It's a unique shop, well worth the visit.  If you are interested, contact Donna.

This week I finished another thread catcher bag and a small purse kit.   I also finished a quilt for one of the veterans in a disabled veterans group who are coming to the Villages this month.

Kim Hart worked on a fidget quilt this afternoon and handed it in before we left.

Next week is general charity sewing week.  I will be bringing in as many of the supply boxes as I can for fidget quilts, dog beds, back packs, walker bags, and  charity quilts.

The following week we will have a specialty charity week, dedicated to pillowcases.  Anyone who owns a serger should bring that machine in.  Those who have regular sewing machines can sew the pillowcase cuffs and then the pillow cases can be completed on the sergers.  By working assembly line we hope to get a bunch of these done for Case for Smiles.

See you all next week
