June 16, 2021 - Club's 5th Anniversary

 

We celebrated the 5th anniversary of our club today with lots of good food.   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thanks to everyone for the lovely gift of a sewing machine music box.  I really love it.  

Show and Tell:

Eileen DiSanto showed some hexi mug rugs she made at a class she, Pat Pipa and B.J. attended on Saturday.

 

 

The ones Pat and B.J. made are hot-pad size.  

 

 

B.J. is going to show us how to make these at a future meeting.

Carole Lamb used the past year and a half to finish several projects.  She made a rag quilt from leftover fabrics from making children's pillowcases.  

 

 

Next she showed a quilt she made starting with a large block she found in our stash back in 2019.  

 

Finally, she brought in about 20 pillowcases, some from our recent kits and some from the past year.

In addition to the hot plates, Pat Pipa made several walker bags

 

and some mug rugs for our sale.

 

 

Deb Chapman came with a couple of tote bags made from charm squares.  

 

Back in 2019 I handed out a bunch of quilt block kits.  Deb took the ones that came back and put the blocks together into a quilt top.

 

 

Carolyn Grasso pulled a stack of Christmas squares from our donation stash and turned in a completed quilt top.  

 

She also made another dinosaur.

I gave the group a pretty big challenge this afternoon with a "color" trivia quiz.  There were 30 multiple choice questions.  Diane Placek and Deb Chapman got the most right answers with 18 and 17 out of 30. 

 

For the rest of the afternoon we played "Sewing Bingo."   Today was also EIleen DiSanto's birthday, so it was fun that she won the first 2 games. 

Next week was going to be a charity and free-sew week, but Audrey Phillips sent me a nice pattern for a patriotic place mat.   I asked for a show of hands and everyone wanted to do this.   I will send out the supply list and pattern separately.

Club Notes - June 9, 2021

We had a great demo by Donna Rissman this afternoon. She showed a different way to approach binding a quilt. I have attached a copy of the directions to my email.

There were 15 of us at the meeting this afternoon. I brought supplies to make patriotic, Halloween and Christmas mug rugs, as well as 3.5 inch squares and a bunch of heavy fabric which I started cutting for walker bag kits.  Several ladies suggested some other items we can sell for under $10 at the October sale.  As I said previously, any money we make will go into our charity supply fund (which is also funded by our 50/50s).  Our biggest expense for our charity efforts is for batting since most everything else is donated.   I can get a 40 yard by 90 inch bolt of cotton batting for just under $300 when it is on sale.

and showed a wreath she made at a class at the Allamanda quilt chapter yesterday.

 

 

Diane Placek took over 100 3/5 inch squares from our staff and came with a bow-tie pattern quilt top.

Eileen DiSanto showed the mug rugs she made.

Mic Pickard has been making quilts for Christmas gifts this year, but was concerned about how much room gift boxes would take in her car.  Instead of boxes, she is making personalized gift bags.

Ceal Pedersen made a set of mug rugs

 

 and a dinosaur.

Donna Rissman showed the mug rugs she made, with a suggestion on how to present them for sale.

 

 She also showed a bear she made (for herself) using a dear friend's clothing.

Carol Riggs showed a reversible patriotic bench pillow she made.

 

 

I showed 4 sets of mug rugs I made, 1 patriotic and 3 with Halloween themes.

 

 

Lu Karatzas is leaving for New Hampshire next week, so she surprised me with roses to celebrate our club's 5th anniversary, which we will be celebrating next week.

 

 

Donna finished the binding on 3 of our quilts, but I forgot to show them. 

Deb Chapman made this one using some of our orphan blocks to get the idea started.

 

 

The other 2 were ones I made.

This one started with a stack of maroon/blue/pink 6"x9" rectangles that were donated.  (I still have more of them)  I matched them up with random 4" squares from our stash.

 

The patriotic one was a kit I got on sal at one of our shop hops 2 years ago.

Next week will be our first post-Covid pot-luck party.   I will supply the plates, plastic-ware, napkins, and ice tea.  Please bring a dish of your choice, to be shared, plus 25 pennies or buttons for Bingo.  As always, show and tell is also welcome. Hope to see you next week.

Club Notes - June 2, 2021

 

We had 11 ladies at our meeting this afternoon. Everyone seemed to be enthused to work on the mug rugs.  I brought fabric so anyone who wanted to could make some mug rugs for us to sell at the Fall Craft Festival Oct. 2nd.  I have paid for a table at this event and any money we make will be added to our charity supply fund.

I attached a revised version of the supply list and instructions for the mug rug to our email.   I hope this version clears up the errors and ambiguities of what I sent out before.

If there is anything else you would like to make for us to sell with a price under $10, that would be great.  If our charity fund reaches $300, that would cover a 40" x 90" bolt of batting when it goes on sale.  Since we currently have $198 in that fund, it is not a stretch.  Our weekly 50/50 also goes into this fund.

Last week I delivered the following to Project S.O.S.:

9 Tote Bags

30 stuffed toys

2 knit blankets

2 rag quilts

a box of crayons, a sketch pad, and 2 decks of cards.

some small toiletries.

Lu Karatzas showed a pillow in progress using Oriental fabrics to go with a friend's Oriental art.

 

 

 

 

Mary Ellen Boutin turned in 2 quilt tops before leaving us for the summer.

Carolyn Grasso made a bear and pillow cases.

 

 

 

Last week Donna Rissman showed her Eclipse wall hanging, unfinished.  This week she brought it back completed with stars instead of quilting, and it is perfect.

Donna also showed how a panel can be re-imagined into something else - in this case table runners.

 

 

 

I finished a drawstring backpack

and showed the start of a double-wedding ring quilt I am working on, using an Anita GoodDesign embroidery pattern.

 

I also showed the last of the large quilts that were donated to us.  I quilted this and Donna Rissman did the binding.

 

Next week Donna will be demonstrating the new easy binding method she has learned.  We will also continue making items to sell in the fall.
