Club Notes - June 5, 2019

It may be a few weeks yet before the official first day of summer, but the signs are already apparent in The Villages.  Most of our snowbird members left at the end of April.  Now a few of our permanent residents who spend summers up north are leaving. Last week Ellen Hein left for points north and today was Lu Karatzas' last week with us until September. Although she's not going north for a few weeks yet, her responsibilities with the retired social workers club will occupy her for the next few weeks.  We will miss them and our snowbird friends.  Wishing them safe travels, happy times with families, and looking forward to their return in the fall.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard made a fidget walker bag, 25 zipper bags, and several samples of a phone bag (to be demoed later in the year.)

Bev Minnerly made several more zipper bags.

Diane Placek made a fidget walker bag and a quilt top, which will be donated through her church.

B.J. Herter made 5 more frogs.

Donna Rissman made a winter table runner from border from border fabric.

Laura Tomich made 9 pillowcases and 2 small tote bags.

Lu Karatzas made 2 walker bags and turned in a full dog bed.

Judy Mayer made 2 walker bags and 2 zipper bags.

I finished a fidget walker bag and 5 zipper bags.

I also finished quilting another of Roberta Kelsey's quilts.

Donna Rissman ran today's demo of the mesh tote bags.  She gave me a copy of the updated instructions and it is attached to my email for your reference.

Several ladies got to work making the mesh bags this afternoon.  Some others helped sort donated fabric or sorting cut fabric blocks by size and color.  This will make it easier to turn them into quilts.

Bev Minnerly took a load of items for delivery to the Sheriffs' Youth Ranch.  Today we sent 4 quilts, 4 fleece blankets, 19 pillow cases, and 51 zipper bags!  Adding the 33 zipper bags we gave them last week, that makes 84 zipper bags made and delivered in only 3 weeks!

We also have 13 fidget walker bags to be delivered to Helpertunity.  Amazing work!  Thank you!

Since our next meeting is just before Flag day and only a few weeks before July 4th, I thought it would be fun to make a flag pillow.  To make the front 11" x 16" block you will need;

Blue: (2) 2 1/2″ squares, (6) 2 1/2″ x 3″ strips, Red: (3) 1 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ strips, (3) 1 1/2″ x 16 1/2″ strips, White: (3) 1 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ strips

If you want to make this into a pillow you will need some additional border and backing fabric to make it fit the pillow form of your choice.  I've attached a picture so you can see the result.

Hope to see you all next week.
