Club Notes March 20, 2019

We made some great progress on the quilts for the Sheriff's Youth Ranch graduates today.  There have been 2 completed masculine quilts and 1 quilt top turned in, plus I know of several more in progress.  There were enough blocks completed in today's meeting for another quilt, and I plan to give Pat enough cut pieces to make 4 more sets for anyone who would like to try this at the next meeting. We also have 1 more feminine quilt to add to the mix.

Announcements:

- Busy Hands is have a fund raising sale on Monday, March 25th, 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM, at Coconut Cove Rec Center.  The proceeds benefit more than 40 area facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living , Boggy Creek, shelters, hospitals and homeless shelters.  Please stop by if you can.
- Nita Hand's knee surgeries were successful, but now she is dealing with heart issues.  She recently had a stent inserted to take care of a blockage and needs still another surgery in the near future.  It will be a little longer before she can join us.
-Donna Rissman is going to be teaching classes at the Sewing Studio.
-Lynn is teaching at the Quilting Pallet.

-Mic Pickard showed 2 tissue box covers she made from a kit she found at The Quilt Shop of Deland last week.

-Carol Thurston made a bunch of dryer sheet blocks and a couple of dog beds.

-Donna Rissman showed a table runner and a pillow.

-I found 2 more quilt tops in our donation piles and finished them. One is masculine so I'm counting it towards the Sheriff's Ranch quilts.

I also finished my fabric covered box and a special request fidget walker bag.

After show and tell I pulled out bags of pre-cut 10 inch squares.  The squares were of various fabrics found in our donation stash, which I separated by color families and grouped in sets of 5 squares.  I then showed everyone how to cut the squares, shuffle the pieces, and sew them back together to make crazy patch squares.  The ladies who brought machines started right away sewing the once I had prepared together.  I continued cutting more while other ladies ironed or squared of the completed blocks. As I said above, I hope to have the rest cut and shuffled so they can be sewn together during the next 2 meetings.

There is no meeting next week.  The next meeting is back in our regular room on April 3rd.  I will be away for the first 2 weeks in April, so Pat Pipa will be running the meeting.

Lu Karatzas will be giving a demo on April 3rd on how to make a fringe t-shirt.  All you need to bring is a t-shirt to try this on. Have lots of sewing fun.  See you in a few weeks.

Club Notes - March 6, 2019

We had lots to talk about today.  Here's a recap:

- The Quilt Shop of Deland is closing as of the end of March and they have announce sales, and door prizes to celebrate Judy Hansen's retirement. Some of us are going there next Wednesday afternoon and we have plenty of room for anyone who wants to join the fun.  The plan is to leave from El Santiago about noon.  It's only a little over an hour drive, so we should be back before 4PM.  This puts the entire trip with the normal club meeting time.  At the moment there are only 3 of us, but each of us is willing to drive if we get more interested.   Please email me back by no later than Monday if you would like to come along.

- There are 7 boys and 1 girl who will be graduating from the Sheriff's Youth ranched on May 7th.  We have been asked if we can provide each of the with a quilt.  At today's meeting we decided to provide each of these young adults with a duffel back, quilt and pillow case.  Anne and Ellen have said they will make the duffel bags.  For our charity project next week I will show how to make a quilt using an easy stack and wack pattern.   I will go through our fabrics and bring enough to make the blocks for 8 quilts.  You can work on one of these by yourself of partner with someone else to make a quilt top.  Once the tops are done I will provide batting and backing.  You can either finish it yourself of give it to me to quilt.  These kids will be on their own and could use some love, so I hope everyone will help out.

- Lastly, I told everyone about a fundraising project that I just found out about.  There is a group trying to raise money for the purchase of a handicap accessible glass bottom boat for Silver Springs State Park.  If this is something you would like to support, you can donate at FloridaStateParksFoundation.org (please specify "Glass Bottom Boat Project".

Show and Tell:

Pat Pipa made a basket of kitchen items for a Busy Hands fundraiser.  She also made a dent in her UFO's, finishing a pillowcase and a decorated wine bag for our charities and a quilt for herself.

Bev Minnerly made several doll outfits and showed the basket she won from the Quilts on Plum Lane shop in Dade City. It contained a quilt pattern and a stack of fabric to make it.

Lu Karatzas showed the origami purse she finished,
a fidget quilt and a quilt she made for her latest grandson.

Carol Thurston brought in 2 dog beds

Eileen DiSanto made 2 cup holders and a pillowcase.

Ellen Hein gets this week's prize.  She made 13 fleece blankets and 1 large boy's quilt.  (showing finished back as well as front.

I showed the duffel bag I made last week, a quilt top I found in our donation bag and finished, and a quilt that was requested by a man whose daughter-in-law is deploying to Afghanistan.  The blocks were made by 2 ladies in Allamanda and I put it together
 .

Lu gave an excellent demonstration today of how to recycle any box by covering it with fabric.  This is an inexpensive way to make stylish storage.

Thanks to several ladies who went through a big bag of scraps, sorted out the good fabric and filled several dog beds.

There is no meeting next week.  As noted above, please let me know if you'd like to join our trip to Deland in that time slot.
