Club Notes - June 1, 2022

 It was another fun afternoon.  Audrey Phillips and her daughter Lynn Delgado.brought a guest – Lynn’s granddaughter Aubrey. We always enjoy seeing the next generation interested in crafts, especially sewing.

 

Today’s announcements:

-          A reminder that the Honor Flight with an all female veteran group will  return  tonight.  I understand there will be entertainment starting at 9PM and the bus bringing them home should arrive about 11PM.  If you can go welcome them home, go to the American Legion building at the corner of Rolling Acres Rd and Rt 466.  We recommend you bring a lawn chair and bug spray.

-          I received an email from one of our recent new members – Betty Richter,  Her husband had a heart attack on Monday and he is in critical condition.  I circulated a card for them at the meeting.

This week I brought red, white and blue fabric so anyone who wants to can make patriotic quilts.  As I mentioned last week, there are 3 places I send these

-          Honor Flight quilts should be 40” x 60: and be red, white and blue.  Use of panels, especially ones with specific service branches are welcome.

-          Cornerstone Hospice quilts need to be 36-40 inches square and need to have the special cornerstone block in the center. I have these center blocks with me every week.

-          Compassionate Care Hospice has no size requirements, they only want the quilts to be red, white and blue.  The recipients are mostly in nursing homes or receiving hospice care at home.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard made a 3-block purse from our demo a few weeks ago.

Ceal Pedersen turned in a patriotic quilt for Honor Flight 

and showed a quilt top she is going to finish for Cornerstone Hospice.

Pat Pipa showed a small rope bowl

 and a quilt as you go quilt.

Jean Peters made several clothing protectors

 and 2 walker bags.

Audrey Phillips made an apron for her husband and covered it with vinyl for easy cleaning.

Audrey’s great-granddaughter showed the stuffed cat Audrey made for her, autographed by her most recent classmates.  (She is a military kid and will be moving to a new school in the fall.)  

She also showed a bear her grandmother Lynn made for her, 

a purse, 

and an apron originally made for her mother.

This week I made 3 rope bowls using macramé yarn and 2 Christmas coasters.

I also made 3 of the 3-block purses.  I used 8.5 inch squares instead of the 10 inch, so these are a little smaller..

B.J. Herter showed a small zip-lock tote made with a potholder base.

Donna Rissman presented today’s demo of a folded Petal Purse. 

 The key to this project is making the pattern template.  After that, the tote goes together quickly.  (I finished mine before the end of the meeting.)  The instructions are attached to this week's email.  Here are some photos I took during the demo:

 It has been a while since we made toys for the hospital, so next week I will bring our stuffed toy patterns and we will have a toy making afternoon.  This is a good assembly line project. Those who don’t bring sewing machines can cut out the fabric and hand the pieces to the sewers.  Other non-sewers can stuff the toys once they are sewn.  Hope to see you next week.

 

Club Notes - May 25, 2022

 We had a great afternoon with 19 ladies attending, including 1 new member and 1 guest. Ceal Pedersen gave a great talk on what to do and what not to do to take care of your quilts.  The 2 main takeaways are, do not keep your quilts in light for any length of time and don’t store your quilts in plastic, store them in a pillowcase instead.

 

I made a couple of announcements today:

-          The Honor Flight leaving on 5/31 will be an all female veteran flight, with 65 veterans including some who served in WWII.  Unlike prior Honor Flights, these ladies will be staying overnight and returning on 6/1.  If you would like to welcome them home, go to the American Legion building at the corner of Rolling Acres Rd and Rt 466 that evening.  They are scheduled to return at 10:45PM.

-          Although they have enough quilts for this and the next Honor Flight, they are looking for more quilts for future flights.  Honor Flight quilts should be 40” x 60: and be red, white and blue.  Use of panels, especially ones with specific service branches are welcome.

Pat Pipa showed the bag she made using last week’s pattern.

Bev Minnerly showed a mesh beach bag she finished.

Charlotte Cecilio showed a purse

 and 2 toys she made. (Ceal's twin Bonnie helped show the dino.

Mary Ellen Boutin made 2 zipper bags 

and a patriotic quilt top.  She is heading north for the summer so we’ll see her again in September.

Audrey Phillips made a stuffed cat for one of her grandchildren and is working on 2 purses using last week’s pattern.

Laura Tomich was finally able to join us again and she showed 2 pillowcase dresses she made.  She was given a bunch of these to make on her serger, but the pattern they required was not serger friendly.  Since the lady who requested she work on them was very fussy about how they should be done, she gave the rest back (and we applauded her for that.)  

 Laura also showed a Runaround purse she made.  She reinforced the strap with a decorative stitch.

Liz Manzione finished a tote bag she has been working on.

I finished a quilt that was one of my UFOs.

Several ladies expressed some difficulty in making the purse I demoed last week, so I reviewed the instructions I sent out.   These instructions have to be followed in the order listed on the page.  If you do anything out of sequence you will have trouble, so please read the instructions carefully.

This week I brought the large blocks, some sample fabric for zipper bags, and our 3 ½ inch squares.  I suggested that some of you might want to match up sets of these to make 9-patch blocks which we can later put into a quilt.

 

Next week Donna Rissman is scheduled to give a demo on how to make a folded basket.  Details to follow in a separate email.

Club Notes - May 18, 2022

 We had 16 attend this afternoon's meeting and, as usual, had lots of fun.  I only brought batting scraps, the 8.5" squares, 10" squares, pre-quilted fabric and some large pieces of flannel.  Mic brought the bins of large fabric pieces, as usual.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard showed the quilt she pinned last week, all finished.  This quilt was donated by someone outside of our club and Mic found areas where there were holes or other defects that needed attention.  She resolved this by applying yo-yo's to cover the problem areas.  This was a great solution.

  

She also took a pre-printed aprons and finished it.  

Pat Pipa made some more embroidered rope coasters.

Judy Mayer turned in a lovely scrappy quilt top

Ceal Pedersen showed how she has expanded her applique fun from tote bags to various items of clothing.

Diane Sacula showed two pillowcases she made for (great?) nephews and a quilt top she made.

Diane Placek made a stuffed fish and a zipper bag.

Bev Minnerly showed the beach tote she started last week. She also showed some thin wood she picked up at a Dollar store to use in the bottom of the bags.

Mary Ellen Boutin made a quilt top, a tote bag, and matching zipper bag.

Liz Manzione showed a bag she has been working on.

I showed 2 more phone and ID cases I made in the hoop on my embroidery machine.  I enlarged the pattern on these so they fit larger phones.

Today's demo was on how to make a cute purse from 6 fabric squares.  The pattern and an explanation on how to make an adjustable strap are attached to my email. 

Next week Ceal will talk to us about how to care for our quilts and how to restore old ones.  I hope to see you all there.
