Club Notes - September 15, 2021

There were 11 of us at this afternoon's meeting.  It was a low-key afternoon, with more socializing than sewing.  We got lots of show and tell though:

Show and Tell:

Ceal Pedersen started us off with a fabric box and a quilt top.

 

 

 

Mic Pickard made some fabric boxes and showed a purse she completed for a friend who found it too challenging.  Mic has been working on this for a few weeks and from her description it may be the purse from hell.  It had many pages of instruction and included a thick foam stabilizer and bias binding that has to go around several thick layers.  Mic did a great job on this despite the difficulties.

Audrey Phillips showed some embroidery she finished and several different sizes of the fabric boxes.

 

 

 

Charlotte Cecillio came with a bunch of stuffed dinosaurs and frogs.

Jean Piccirillo came back from her summer travels with a bunch of walker bags.

Donna Rissman finished some pillowcases and a fabric box

.

She also made 2 gnome table runners, showing the 2 main variations on the 60 degree triangle pattern.

 

 

Pat Pipa made some fabric boxes and put together a Christmas Carol soft book that was found in our donation stash.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Carole Lamb made some pillow cases

 

 

 and some zipper bags.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ellen Hein showed the final result of 4 quilts.  She made all 4 tops, I added the backing, batting and quilting, and Ellen finished the binding.

Liz Manzione finished a pillowcase and a fabric box.

I finished a fabric box and 5 "Round TUIT" coasters with a gardening motif.  I also showed 2 pumpkin potholders, which are examples of next week's project.

I brought several boxes of donated fabric for attendees to work with and Mic brought the bins of semi-fat quarter pieces again.   Everyone had a chance to look through these and pick pieces to work with.  I pulled a panel from the "big block" box and, with some help from Ellen, added sashing blocks to design a quilt top.  Then I designed a 2nd quilt top with a more feminine theme.  I saw several other ladies helping each other in various projects.

Next week will be another easy week.  I will show how to make pumpkin-shaped potholders.  All you need is 2 9 inch square pieces of orange fabric, a 9 inch square of insul-bright and a 10-12 inch by 2 inch strip of green fabric for the stem. An optional addition would be some batting to make the potholder a little thicker.  I am experimenting with this pattern and will send an update in a few days.

If this email came a little later than usual, it's because I was a bit distracted tonight.  Ray and I watched the first civilians being launched into space on a SpaceX rocket.  We watched both on TV and from the back of our house as they soared into the sky. What a momentous event!

Club Notes - Septermber 8, 2021

There were 10 of us at this afternoon's meeting.   I showed everyone how to make the little reversible basket from 10" squares.   It was fun and at least 6 of them were turned in before the end of the meeting.  The pattern is attached to my email for anyone who would like to try it.

Show and Tell:

Before the meeting Laura Tomich dropped off 10 pillowcases she sewed together for us.

Anne Knoff brought us an embroidered reading pillow for our sale.

Donna Rissman showed some Halloween pin cushions she made.

Audrey Phillips made a couple of the long potholders we showed last week, but put her own spin on how to make them.

Bev Minnerly showed a birthday gift she received from her daughter.

Pat Pipa made a fidget walker bag, 

a long potholder, 

and a set of reusable Christmas gift tags she embroidered for our sale.

Carole Lamb made some walker bags 

and a no-batting quilt.

Deb Chapman finished her September block of the month 

and handed in a quilt top.

Ceal Pedersen made a scrappy lap quilt for herself and handed in a quilt top for us.

Ellen Hein showed two quilts that I made and she finished the binding on.

I showed the long potholders I made for our sale.  

I also finished two Christmas stockings and a small round tablecloth that I found in our Christmas fabric stash.

After show and tell I gave the demo and everyone dived into the fabric stashes to make the fabric boxes and other stuff.

We don't have any projects scheduled for next week.  Instead we will work on finishing the projects from the last couple of weeks or work on our own stuff. I will bring the 10 squares again as well as some of our small squares (5" maybe)  to design some quilt tops.

Club Notes - September 1, 2021

There were 8 of us at E Santiago this afternoon.  It was a rainy day and the rec center manager told me we were the largest group to show up today.  I was prepared for a minimalist meeting, so was happy to see the ladies who were able to come out.

Over the last week I delivered 7 walker bags to Helpertunity, 6 quilts to DaVita Dialysis at Laurel Manor, and 39 dog beds to the Humane Society of Lake County.  We've now delivered all the lap quilts I had in storage and still have at least a dozen larger quilts.  If you are planning to make quilts for donation, please make the smaller ones (50x60 or less).   This includes both patriotic and standard quilts, as I have several places to donate these to.  If you want to make quilts for Cornerstone Hospice Veterans, those need to have their pre-printed block in the quilt and should be 36"-40" square.  I have the required blocks, just ask.

 

Show and Tell:

 

Mic Pickard finished a circular lap robe, which we can give to the Compassionate Care hospice. 

 

 

She also showed an apron and matching mask she made for her daughter.  She now loves this apron pattern.

 

Audrey Phillips showed two car trash bags, one for her

and one for her daughter.   

 

 

She also showed finger potholders for getting stuff out of the microwave.

 

 

Deb Chapman continued her block of the month challenge, but this time, since  she was away on vacation, sewed the block BY HAND!!

 

 

 

 

 

Ellen Hein made a tote for our sale from some fabric in our stash.

 She handed in 3 more quilt tops 

 

 

 

 

and finished the binding on 2 quilts Carolyn Grasso made

 and one by Mary Ellen Boutin.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Judy Mayer showed some embroidery she tried on some napkins.  (She is still deciding what to do with them.)

After show and tell I showed how the pieces for the double potholder go together. Although the instructions I found (see document attached to my email) don't include it, I think a piece of batting would be good between the small (6.5" x 7.5") hand pieces.  This does add another layer,, but I plan to try it.

Since it was raining pretty hard, most of us didn't bring our sewing machines in, so we concentrated on matching fabric and cutting the pieces to the pattern sizes.  I brought a box of Christmas fabric as well as a box of other large pieces.  We will see what comes back.

 

The box of Christmas fabric contained a lot of panels, so some ladies took some of those to see what they can do with them.

Next week  we will try a pattern for a from the 10" squares we have.  I will send more info over the weekend.
