Club Notes - January 18, 2023

We had 14 members attending this afternoon, and lots of activity.  I started by giving out my annual attendance gifts to Ceal Pedersen and Mic Pickard for having attended the most meetings in 2022. They each attended 36 meetings last year.

Next I talked about the information I heard at the Sheriff’s Youth Ranch Donor Thank You Luncheon. The camp in Bradenton has closed, so now there are 2 camps.  Live Oaks is a co-ed campus that can accommodate 82 boys and girls.  There is a private school on the campus or they can attend the local public school,  The private school  is accredited and has a 100% graduation rate.

The other campus is Safety Harbor and focuses on taking siblings out of foster care.  Children 3 years old and up are cared for there.

They also run week long camps during the summer for kids to give them the outdoors experience and for them to learn that the officers who work in their schools are real, OK people.

The 4th program they have is called Harmony in the Streets.  This is a mobile camping program that provides day camp activities directly to local communities that may be socially and/or economically challenged.

If you want to learn more about this program that we donate to, see https://www.youthranches.org/.

The next item I talked about was the Giving Showcase to be held Feb. 4th at Lake Miona.  We have a table there and I plan to display a sample of items we donate to various local charities. Thank you to those who have turned in items for me to choose from.   I will have information printed that can be handed out to those interested in joining our club.

I will be there the entire time (8AM-2PM), and would appreciate at least one person to join me for each 2 hour shift.  Ceal has volunteered to work with me 8AM-10AM, but I still need help from 10AM-Noon and Noon-2PM.    If you can spare a little time to help I would greatly appreciate it.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard showed some bags

and

mini yo-yo clips for her daughter to use in her business.

Louise Stem made some pillow cases.

Donna Rissman also made pillowcases.

B.J. Herter made a bunch of strip blocks for Ellen to turn into quilts.

Brenda Severa made a charity quilt from some of our squares.

Bev Minnerly made 4 pillowcases

 and a tote bag.

Ceal Pederesen made some zipper bags

and 2 baby quilts.

Jean Peters made 8 cosmetic bags.

Lorraine Manz made some bags and pillowcases.

Ellen Hein made a hat for a friend dealing with cancer

and a Hospice quilt top.

She also showed the latest batch of charity quilts she completed the binding on.

 Lorraine Manz made this one.

I made this one.

I think Carolyn Grasso made this top.

I don't know who did this one.  If you made this top, let me know and I will update this entry.

Ellen put this together from strip blocks made by club members.

Mary Ellen Boutin made this quilt top.

BJ Herter, Pat Pipa and I showed quilts we made as entries in Allamanda Quilters’ annual sewing challenge. I won’t post these photos until our next meeting, which is the day after the day when they will be entered in the challenge.

We received a HUGE fabric donation today, so sorting it all diverted a lot of the planned activities.  I did show a couple of ladies how to make a pillowcase using the “burrito” method, and how to make a walker bag according to the Helpertunity pattern.  I went home with a load of dog beds as well as some fabric large enough to use as quilt backings.

Our next meeting is in 2 weeks, on February 1st.  We will continue making zipper bags.  I forgot that there is a box of fabric sets for walker bags in the closet, so I will pull that out for anyone interested in making one.  I will repeat the demo if necessary.  We can also use some stuffed toys.  I will ask Mic to bring the stuffing next week so we can complete some of these.

Have a great 2 weeks and I hope to see you at the next meeting

Club Notes - January 4th, 2023

Today we had a potluck party to welcome the new year.  I am hoping 2023 will be a better year.  It was great being back with the club.   There were only 13 of us today, so I’m guessing several of you have not returned from holiday visits..

I had a few announcements.

-          The 2023 Giving Clubs Showcase will be held at Lake Miona on Feb 4th, 10AM-2PM,  This hasn’t been scheduled for the last couple of years due to COVID, but it is now back.  We participated in the first one a few years ago and will have a table at this one.  Our participation is easy – we just show a couple of the items we make for charity and tell people who stop by about our club.  At our next meeting I will be asking for a few volunteers to help in shifts, 10-12 and 12-2.  I also asked members to make some toys, walker bags and pillowcases to show.  I have quilts, zipper bags and dog beds that I will bring.  I will also have information handouts.

-          I visited the Sewing Studio at Lady Lake yesterday and the manager offered to extend the same discount they give to guild members to our club members.  All you need is a membership card for Sewing N More.  I printed some cards and gave them out at today’s meeting and will have them available for any member who comes to a meeting.  Just ask me.

Show and Tell

Pat Pipa made some zipper bags

and a stack of 11” strip squares for Ellen to work with.

Louise Stem showed 2 bell pulls she made.

Deb Chapman showed a placemat,

a runner she is working on,

and some squares she made with leftover fabric.

Anne Knoff showed some zipper bags

and tote bags that her friend Cindy made and donated to our charities.

Ceal Pedersen showed zipper bags she made

and 2 quilts.

Lisa Strahs-Lorenc is back in The Villages for the month of January.  She showed a doll’s hospital shirt she made.

Carolyn Grasso made some wine bags as gifts and some ornaments.

Ellen Hein showed some Hospice quilts she finished the binding on.

She made the tops for several of these, showing the different ways you can make blocks to work with the Cornerstone block or to make a regular quilt.

This one has rectangular blocks made with dryer sheets as the foundation.  The method for this is the same as the folded fabric method you have been doing with the10-11" muslin or sheet squares as foundation.

This one puts the rectangular dryer sheet blocks together to make a patriotic quilt for Compassionate Care Hospice.

Judy Mayer showed a Santa runner she made.

While I was recovering from surgery, one of the few things I could do was to sew.  I showed 2 baby quilts I made to put aside for future great nieces or nephews,

some zipper bags,

and the first row (Spring) of a 4-seasons wall hanging I am making on my embroidery machine.

I also showed the shirt I embroidered for New Years.
The front has a cocktail glass with a drucken elf, a clock approaching midnight, and a round Happy New Year motif.

The back has a line from the Harry Potter books and the Happy New Year motif in a different color.

We are now on our winter schedule, so there will be no meeting next week.  Our next meeting is January 18th. Our main focus will be making zipper bags.  If you need instruction on how to make a zipper bag, several of our members will be able to help.  I will also bring instructions for how to make pillowcases and walker bags, and will be willing to demonstrate these to anyone interested.

How to see you on the 18th.
