Club Notes Oct 2, 2019

This morning Pat Pipa and I attended the fall meeting of Villages Club Leaders. There are now 3,100 clubs in The Villages!!

After the meeting I lined up to sign our room permit for 2020.  I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the recreation department has found a way to approve our room reservation for all but 3 weeks this winter. We no longer have to meet only every other week during the winter.  We will have to break for 3 weeks from Dec 25 through Jan 8 and we have 1 week in March that we won't have a room, but other than that we can meet every week.  We still have to switch rooms for Jan, Feb & March, but we will still be at El Santiago.  

I've posted the schedule at the bottom of this email.  You will see there are lots of openings for project ideas. If you have something to show or something you'd like to see demoed, please let me know.

On another note, the Creative Quilter's Market will be held at Savannah this Saturday, 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM.  We encourage everyone to stop by and see what they are selling. 

Show and Tell:

Diane Placek took the dinosaur pattern from Pinterest and enlarged it to a reasonable size. This will be a great addition to our toys for the kids at the hospital.

Bev Minnerly and B.J. Herter showed scarves with kitchen towels attached.  This is a great way to have towels handy while you are cooking.  (I'm wondering if the ends could be potholders?)  We are hoping for a demo in the future.

B.J. Herter also made a fun Flip-Flop pillow as a gift and finished a candy corn table topper.

Charlotte Cecilio made more coordinated red, white and blue dryer sheet blocks.

Mic Pickard finished some candy zipper bags, a Halloween table mat, and some frogs. She found a new way to do the eyes, with french knots.

Pat Pipa showed the candy zipper bag she finished.

Lu Karatzas made 2 memory pillows for Eileen DiSanto from her husband's shirts.

I finished a couple of candy zipper bags, a pop-up basket, and a charity quilt.

I also finished 2 Cornerstone Hospice quilts that Charlotte and I laid out a few weeks ago.

Today's demo was a simple one on how to make a carrier bag for a full size umbrella. 

After the demo, several ladies took to the ironing boards to press and sort some of the fabric from our donation stash.  Several other ladies helped me sort the 6.5 inch blocks by color family and lay out the brown blocks for a quilt design.  I took the blocks home to add to my UFO project pile. 

Next week I will show you how to make a loyalty card holder.

Club Notes - Sept 25, 2019

The parking lot was an obstacle course again today, with the entrance driveway blocked off,  Congratulations on those who made it through safely.  I hope that was the end of the parking lot resurfacing!

The only announcement I had today was a note about an article in today's Daily Sun.  Another puppy mill was found in the Tampa, but this one was so bad it was completely closed down and 350 dogs were rescued.  We are trying to find out if any were turned over to organizations we are familiar with and, if so, if there is any way we can help. I will keep you posted.

In the meantime, we received a thank you note from Poodles and Pooches. I've scanned the card and attached it so you can see. 

I also delivered a load of stuff for the Sheriffs' Youth Ranch after the meeting.  Thanks to those who brought in completed items today, I had to redo the donation accounting.  All together, today we gave them 10 fleece blankets, 12 pillowcases, 8 zipper bags, 6 draw-string back-packs, 3 hot pads, 1 embellished kitchen towel, 1 roll pillow, and 76 Autumn place mats.  Nice work ladies!!

Show and Tell:

Deb Chapman started us off today.  She completed her sewing machine tool caddy, a crumb pot holder, and a mondo bag.

Carol Thurston showed a bag with a wooden handle that she made and a crumb quilt.

Ellen Hein turned in 5 more fleece blankets. 

 She also finished PJ pants to match a PJ shirt for the girl scouts, and a sleep sack (with a zipper in the back instead of the front) for her grandson.

Carol Riggs brought the place mats that Mary Kalow made.  These were the last 2 we needed for 6 matched sets.

In my spare time last week, I started working on one of my UFO's.  I have a box of home-decor fabric that I cut for draw-string back packs over a year ago.  I finished 6 of these last week, but expect to complete more over the next few weeks.


I also showed 2 bags I made while attending a Professional Bag class offered by the Villages Quilt Guild.  One is the regular large size and the 2nd is the "mini" version.

This is not officially part of show and tell, but I thought I would share anyway. A couple came to our meeting and donated a quilt made by his mother.  They claimed no one has ever actually used it and they have no one to leave it to so they want it to go to a charity for someone who will actually use it.  I took the photo when I got it home.  This is all hand sewn and quilted, and is beautifully done.

Today I showed how to make a zip bag with a snack bag.  Although I am not an expert at this, having only done two, I think I got the basics across.  Thanks to Ellen for filling in with some other ideas to make it better.  I will send the instructions I wrote after viewing a YouTube and the YouTube link in a separate email.

Next week I plan to demo how to make a carrier for a full-size umbrella.  This is easy but you may want to partner with someone for the fabric, since it is best done with strips of the fabric length as opposed to the width.  I will send the details in a separate email.

Club Notes - September 18, 2019

You can tell summer is over. A few of our summer travelers are starting to return.

No significant announcements this week, other than Carol Riggs' estate sale, which I send out a flyer on Tuesday.

Show and Tell:

Mic Pickard has received more requests for aprons for diner waitresses and is having fun personalizing them. The latest request was from her niece's employer.
She also finished 3 stuffed bears and a corn hole bag set for her nephew.

 Charlotte Cecilio made a couple of stuffed frogs, a place mat and another set of red, white and blue dryer sheet blocks.  (Charlotte and I layed out the accumulated blocks this afternoon and found enough for 1 twin quilt and 2 Cornerstone Hospice quilts.  Ann Knoff volunteered to start putting the twin quilt together and I took home the hospice sets.)

Pat Pipa made a zipper bag and came through with 9 place mats for the Youth Ranch.

Eileen DiSanto made some bowl holders and finished one of the pocket place mats.

Audrey Philips made 4 place mats and showed some embroidered mug rugs and Christmas ornaments she made.

Ellen Hein made some PJ Pants for the girl scouts, Halloween shirt and pants for her grand kids, and a dust mop cover made from fleece.  (We will schedule a demo of the dust mop cover)

Carol Thurston finished a place mat and a crumb bed skirt. 

 She also showed a tool caddy with zip-lock bags that she just has to add velcro to.  I  finished quilting a quilt top she made and showed that.

Carol Riggs and Mary Kalow made embroidered bags for 5-drawer plastic containers and they showed Mary's completed bag.

I finished a bunch of place mats to complete the needed sets. I also put a quilt together from embroidered blocks I found in the donation stash.






Next week we will be making some fun zipper bags, using large candy, cookie or other snack bags.  I will send out more info in a separate email.
